Key Responsibilities

Support the Lead Grounds Maintenance Operative and Building Manager in the daily upkeep of the Hospital grounds, which includes:

  • Mowing grass using both ride-on and manual equipment.
  • Strimming, weeding, and scarifying as needed.
  • Pruning and trimming hedges with handheld tools.
  • Planting and caring for flower beds, including internal courtyards and enhanced garden areas.
  • Conducting winter maintenance tasks such as gritting and snow removal.

Execute planned preventative maintenance in line with Trust policies and schedules. Manage your daily workload effectively and assist other trades and contractors as required. Promote a positive image of the Estates Department and the wider Trust.

Job Duties

Adhere to routine maintenance schedules and procedures for the grounds and gardens, vehicles, and equipment across all Hospital sites.

  • Perform planned preventative maintenance in accordance with Trust policies and schedules.
  • Assist the Lead Grounds Maintenance Operative and Building Manager in daily maintenance tasks while minimizing risks and complying with relevant legislation and policies.
  • Demonstrate competence in using all relevant tools and equipment, adhering to safety guidelines and manufacturers' recommendations for both reactive and planned work.
  • Identify and prioritize your workload, ensuring timely completion of all documentation.
  • Assist with operational tasks within the waste recycling complex as needed.
  • Occasionally perform site cleanliness and litter collection duties across all locations.
  • Safely prepare, clean, use, and securely store equipment, tools, materials, and work areas, leaving them in suitable condition for future use.
  • Hold a valid driving license and operate the Trust's vehicle fleet safely and legally, including towing trailers when required.
  • Participate in the on-call rota and respond to site needs for snow and frost clearance during inclement weather.
  • Maintain tidiness across sites, ensuring they are free from litter, leaves, and debris.
  • Conduct weekly inspections of landscaping, pathways, and trees to identify and address any defects or hazards.
  • Perform pesticide application in accordance with statutory guidelines and regulations.
  • Assist the Lead Grounds Maintenance Operative and Building Manager with project work, surveys, and similar tasks.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or City & Guilds certification in Horticulture or equivalent grounds maintenance qualification, or substantial experience in a similar commercial grounds maintenance role.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Training in Grounds Machinery.
  • Approved pesticide application certifications (PA1 & PA6).
  • Certificates for operating ride-on and pedestrian mowers.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Experience working in horticultural environments.
  • Proven ability to comprehend and follow instructions and detailed procedures.

Desirable

  • Experience in a similar role.
