Plymouth, Plymouth, United Kingdom University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

Role: Staff Nurse

Flexible working hours available

BAND 5 PRE-OPERATIVE ASSESSMENT ROLE

Our welcoming Pre-Assessment unit is seeking dedicated Registered Nurses/Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) to facilitate the peri-operative assessment of patients prior to their surgical procedures. We are engaged in an innovative initiative aimed at enhancing our pre-operative assessment process, which includes acquiring additional skills and knowledge in evaluating blood results and ECG readings. The Pre-operative team operates within the hospital, providing a comprehensive service that offers support and guidance for both complex and straightforward surgical cases.

We prioritize delivering a quality-focused and secure assessment service for all patients. In this role, you will conduct nurse-led assessments of peri-operative risks, utilizing a range of skills and ongoing competencies to ensure the effective operation and delivery of our services.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be accountable for:

  • Conducting thorough assessments of pre-operative patients to identify any potential issues that may delay surgery, ensuring adherence to all professional protocols.
  • Reviewing ECGs and blood test results, organizing care needs based on findings or consultations with clinical leads or anaesthetic teams.
  • Performing comprehensive and holistic evaluations of patients, ensuring they are adequately prepared—physically, psychologically, emotionally, and socially—for surgery.
  • Providing guidance to patients on health promotion and illness prevention.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records while adhering to legal standards, confidentiality, and information management protocols.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence, actively contributing to the integration of this evidence to enhance patient-centered care.
  • Engaging with patients and their families, explaining procedures and treatments to foster understanding and alleviate concerns.
  • Establishing and sustaining effective communication with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure a smoothly run service, particularly with medical staff, anaesthetists, and ward/theatre personnel.
  • Monitoring in-patient and day case activities, collaborating with clinicians to optimize theatre utilization.
  • Supervising junior staff, providing leadership, and serving as a role model for colleagues and trainees.
  • Participating in research and the implementation of new procedures and practices to ensure the continuous development of our services.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development to meet the evolving demands of the role.
