Design and Technical Manager Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Design and Technical Manager to lead the design and build process for a 300-acre site. This key role ensures that the project delivers on its strategic objectives while adhering to all legislative, regulatory, and health and safety requirements.

The successful candidate will provide critical technical input in areas such as design feasibility, value engineering, sustainability, and energy strategy. You will work closely with internal teams and external subcontractors, managing the production and review of design information throughout both the pre-construction and construction phases.

As the Design and Technical Manager, you will be responsible for leading the development and management of the design and pre-construction programme. This includes ensuring design feasibility, overseeing value engineering exercises, planning surveys, and integrating sustainability and energy strategies into the project.

You will also be responsible for commissioning a range of pre-construction reports, such as Arboriculture, Archaeological, Acoustic, and Ecological assessments, to support the project's progress. Effective communication and coordination are essential in this role, and you will organise and chair regular Design Team Meetings (DTM) and Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Client Design meetings to ensure that design milestones are met and any changes or issues are addressed promptly.

A key focus of this role will be on sustainability and energy efficiency. You will lead the development of a robust energy strategy, including overseeing pre-assessment energy strategies (BREEAM), and ensuring that all design stages comply with sustainability goals.

In terms of regulatory compliance, you will manage all statutory applications and ensure the project meets key legislative standards, including those related to water, highways, environment, and building regulations.

To succeed in this role, you should have a strong background in managing complex construction projects, with expertise in design, feasibility, and sustainability strategies. Experience in ensuring regulatory compliance and managing technical certifications is essential. Strong project management skills, coupled with the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, will be critical to ensuring the smooth delivery of this scheme.
