Overview
Please ensure that you provide all necessary information as outlined in the job overview below.
We are the official organization responsible for safeguarding England's historical heritage. Our mission is to advocate for historic sites, assisting individuals in appreciating, valuing, and preserving them.
Historic England presents an excellent opportunity for you to join our team as a Heritage Building Inspector within our London & South East Regions division.
Key Responsibilities
The Development Advisory Teams offer both statutory and non-statutory guidance to our clients, engaging where we can provide the most significant impact on decision-making through our unique expertise as national authorities. The Development Advisory Teams will also collaborate closely with other departments to support communities in maintaining historic sites and advancing Historic England's goals.
As a member of the Development Advisory Teams, you will assume delegated responsibility for delivering Historic England's guidance on proposed modifications to the historic environment within your area of expertise. By applying the principles of 'constructive conservation' and effectively utilizing Conservation Principles in all advisory tasks, you will provide counsel to property owners, local councils, and other stakeholders, proactively working towards the sustainable management of the historic environment. In your role as a Heritage Building Inspector, you will also contribute to specific initiatives where your expertise can add value, such as the Historic England Places strategy.
Important Considerations:
- This position requires regular travel to locations not accessible by public transport.
- The role involves visiting and inspecting sites, which may necessitate climbing scaffolding and navigating confined spaces (e.g., church roofs).
- Attendance at community or planning meetings may be required, which are typically scheduled during evenings or weekends.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- A solid understanding of relevant governmental policies, guidelines, and statutory procedures concerning the historic environment within the planning framework, including Listed Building Consent and Ecclesiastical Exemption.
- A systematic and analytical approach to evaluating proposals for alterations to heritage assets and assessing their implications.
- Exceptional negotiation, influence, and stakeholder engagement abilities to achieve favorable outcomes for the historic environment.
- Creative and constructive problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong teamwork, collaboration, and project management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritize effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
We are an equal opportunity employer that values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we are open to discussing reasonable adjustments to the role with you. We recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
We are committed to inclusivity and believe that flexible working arrangements should be available to everyone. We aim to ensure that our working conditions do not hinder anyone from joining us due to their personal circumstances. We also strive to provide you with the best possible balance between your home and work life.
We are open to considering various options, including job sharing, part-time work, compressed hours, and different working locations, including hybrid arrangements.
Benefits of Working with Historic England
We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a competitive pension scheme with employer contributions starting at 28%, a generous holiday allowance, corporate discounts, free access to English Heritage sites nationwide, and development opportunities to help you achieve your professional goals.
We are dedicated to promoting equal opportunities for all. Diversity enhances our performance and helps us attract a wider range of individuals to support our mission.
We particularly encourage applications from individuals from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, as well as candidates with disabilities, as they are underrepresented within Historic England at this level.
We want all candidates to excel in the recruitment process. Please let us know how we can assist you in showcasing your best self.
