About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Healthcare Assistant to join our dynamic team at the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279). As a Healthcare Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our patients and staff in the Sexual Health and Contraception Service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a chaperone in supporting patients undergoing examinations and assisting in the taking of specimens, ensuring the safety, comfort, and dignity of patients at all times.
  • Carry out urinalysis and pregnancy tests, take bloods, and complete microscopy on genital swabs taken by a trained member of staff, reporting findings and entering results onto the clinical system.
  • Explain to patients the purpose of asymptomatic screening and how to take an appropriate urine sample or self-taken throat, vaginal, or rectal swab.
  • Provide condom demonstration and offer patients information on male and female condoms and lubricants, emergency contraception for any failures, and STI information, signposting clients onto the C card scheme.
  • Enter data accurately into the computer, including demographic, personal, and clinical details of patient attendances, to provide the department with an up-to-date record of patient activity and information.
  • Recognize vulnerable adults and child protection issues, assessing patients from the age of 16 and above when attending for asymptomatic screening and refer them to senior clinical colleagues immediately.
  • Input results onto patient records and text patients accordingly.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Good communication skills, non-judgmental.
  • Chaperoning-can support patients.
  • Education to GCSE level or equivalent with passes in English and maths.
  • Aware of confidentiality.
  • NVQ level 3 in healthcare, C&G certification, or equivalent level of knowledge in care and clinical observation.

Desirable

  • Microscopy.
  • Previous experience in Sexual Health.
  • Venepuncture.
  • IT skills.
