Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Specialist Vision Impairment Teaching Assistant to join our team at Torfaen County Borough Council. The successful candidate will work closely with Qualified Teachers of Vision Impaired (QTVI) and Habilitation Specialists to deliver support for access to learning and learning to access education, independent living skills, and early mobility and orientation skills for children and young people with vision impairment.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, prepare, and deliver learning activities that cater to the needs of children and young people with vision impairment.
- Monitor and assess learners' progress, recording and reporting key features to inform teaching and learning.
- Support an inclusive ethos for all learners, ensuring educational progress, attainment, and expectations align with their age and ability profiles.
- Work closely with QTVI and Habilitation Specialists to deliver support for access to learning and learning to access education, independent living skills, and early mobility and orientation skills.
- Ensure children and young people develop appropriate skills in the use of specialist equipment and resources and support the use of digital technology in learning activities.
- Prepare, plan, and manage specific activities/teaching programmes to promote learners' development within agreed work programmes (Braille/print) with a focus on literacy, numeracy, and well-being.
- Closely monitor and evaluate progress within target areas to provide objective and accurate feedback to teachers.
- Support learners' development within the school setting, home, and the wider community, promoting increased confidence and independence.
- Learn Braille literacy in both English and Welsh.
- NNEB; BTEC, NVQ or similar in areas of child development.
- Braille Qualification or willingness to work towards a Braille qualification.
- Understanding of VI and its implications on development.
- Experience of working with children and young people with vision impairment in a variety of settings.
- Welsh Language Skills.
- Intervenor Accreditation (Sense).
- Specific knowledge of low vision aids and their use in the classroom and outdoor environments.
- Knowledge of supporting learners with sensory impairment in accessing the curriculum.
This is a full-time position, and the successful candidate will be required to travel independently to meet the requirements of the post. A full driving license and access to a vehicle are essential.
Appointment will be subject to successful references and an enhanced DBS check.
The posts are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Application to the Disclosure and Barring Service.
Welsh language skills are essential for at least one of these posts.
