Job Summary

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is a leading organization in the field of animal and plant health, working closely with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, the Scottish Government, and the Welsh Government. Our team of experts is dedicated to providing research, advice, and support to the UK Government to safeguard animal, public, and plant health, ultimately benefiting the environment and economy.

We are seeking an experienced scientist with diagnostic research expertise to join our team as an Exotic Mycoplasma Diagnostic Lead. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing and delivering exotic mycoplasma surveillance and diagnostics at APHA, working closely with our National and International Reference Laboratory functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain specialist knowledge of Mycoplasma microbiology and diagnostic tests.
  • Deputise for the Mycoplasma Team Lead, supporting exotic Mycoplasma ruminant diagnostics and ensuring timely approval of diagnostic reports.
  • Develop and maintain competency to work independently under SAPO2/CL3 containment laboratory conditions, ensuring safe handling and disposal of waste.
  • Manage the Mycoplasma containment laboratory, directing work and staff within the facility, and taking responsibility for laboratory operations in response to disease incidents.
  • Oversee the production of reagents used by other teams in the agency for immunodiagnostic tests and contribute to underpinning research work focused on prevention and control of exotic mycoplasma disease.
  • Direct line management responsibility of up to two team members, supporting their development and line management skills.
  • Organize training in specialist techniques for national and overseas visitors and deliver in-country advisory and training visits as needed.
  • Effectively communicate Mycoplasma expertise with stakeholders, veterinarians, diagnostic customers, and other laboratories, both nationally and internationally.
  • Expand Mycoplasma expertise through communication with international mycoplasmology networks and visits to and by collaborators and other Mycoplasma specialists.
  • Prepare newsletters, presentations, reports, abstracts, and scientific papers to share knowledge and expertise.
  • Ensure work and associated reporting are carried out to ISO17025 and ISO9001 standards, as appropriate.
Requirements
  • Science background with education to minimum degree level in a relevant scientific subject.
  • Diagnostic research expertise with knowledge and experience of research and/or diagnostics with veterinary pathogens, including health and safety management and associated procedures.
  • Good communication skills, including experience of delivering presentations and scientific writing.
  • Experience of designing and delivering specialist laboratory training to others, including visitors.
  • Knowledge and experience of microbiological diagnostic testing and/or research, including standard microbiological/immunological techniques.
  • Good understanding of bacteriological diseases of animals.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access databases.
