Nursing Preceptorship Initiative

The Nursing Preceptorship Initiative is tailored for newly qualified nurses and nursing associates, aimed at fostering their growth into confident, independent practitioners. Participants will enhance their skills, values, and professional behaviors while collaborating with seasoned experts within the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability.

This initiative adheres to the guidelines established in the Capital Nurse Pan London Preceptorship Framework and the standards set forth by Health Education England (HEE).

Our program encompasses three distinct pathways:

  • Accelerated Preceptorship: Designed for nurses and nursing associates recruited during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic who missed a structured transition, as well as for internationally recruited nurses. The program spans six weeks.
  • Preceptorship for Newly Qualified Nurses/Nursing Associates: Aimed at all newly qualified nurses and nursing associates within their first year of employment, lasting between six to nine months.
  • Beyond Preceptorship: Targeted at nurses with 24-36 months of experience who have completed any primary preceptorship program, focusing on career advancement and professional growth.

The initiative combines classroom-based instruction with hands-on experience and assessments in clinical settings, supplemented by eLearning modules. Participants will benefit from paid, protected, and supernumerary time to ensure successful completion of the program.

The curriculum of our preceptorship initiative encompasses two main domains for effective and rewarding practice:

  • Clinical Skills and Competency Development: Focused on building the essential hands-on skills required for delivering safe and effective care.
  • Essential Domains for Practice: This section is divided into six key areas:
  • Clinical Practice: Encompasses professional values, ethics, the NMC code, reflective practice, revalidation portfolio development, and resilience in practice.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Covers conflict resolution, effective communication techniques, data protection, and team management.
  • Leadership and Personal Development: Focuses on leadership skills, emotional intelligence, clinical teaching, supervision, and performance appraisals.
  • Facilitation of Learning: Involves teaching strategies, mentoring, coaching skills, and feedback techniques.
  • Service Improvement and Quality: Addresses risk assessments, staffing safety, clinical audits, and understanding quality measures.
  • Professionalism and Integrity: Discusses the NMC code of conduct, delegation, and diversity in practice.

Participants will receive support from a dedicated clinical education team throughout the program, with sessions led by subject matter experts and assigned experienced preceptors. Paid supernumerary and protected time is allocated for program participation.
