Job Overview

The North Middlesex University Hospital is seeking a highly motivated and experienced physiotherapist to join our acute in-patient physiotherapy service. As a rotational physiotherapist, you will have the opportunity to develop both clinical and managerial skills in a variety of settings, including critical care, acute stroke, medical, and surgical wards.

Main Duties
  1. Perform highly specialist physiotherapy assessments and develop treatment and management programmes for patients with acute and chronic conditions.
  2. Participate in the education and training of staff-grade physiotherapists, technicians, assistants, students, and other healthcare professionals.
  3. Deputise for the team leader physiotherapist in their absence.
  4. Participate in the 7-day service rota and emergency on-call respiratory rota.
  5. Complete rotations in acute stroke, admission avoidance, critical care/respiratory, medical, oncology, elderly care, orthopaedics, and paediatrics.
  6. Supervise band 5s, therapy assistants, and students.
  7. Participate in the audit and research process for quality improvement.
  8. Work in an integrated manner with occupational therapists to improve patient care.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  1. Degree or diploma in physiotherapy.
  2. Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
  3. Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.

  1. Member of a relevant clinical interest group.

  9. Competent to perform within the on-call ITU rota.
  10. Able to identify own training needs and support others to do likewise.
  11. Good counselling and advocacy skills.
  12. Able to employ motivational and influencing skills.

Experience and Knowledge

  1. Completed the core rotations (ITU, acute medicine, older peoples acute care, neurology or acute stroke/surgery/orthopaedics).
  2. Fully competent to practice in intensive care.
  3. Experience across a range of NHS sectors.
  4. Experience of writing and delivering in-service training programmes.
  5. Experience of supervising non-qualified staff.
  6. Experience of discharge planning.
  7. Experience of completing basic functional assessments.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Experience of undertaking an improvement project.

Personal Qualities

  1. Basic computer literacy.
  2. Knowledge of current NHS initiatives.
  3. Understanding of Clinical Governance and its application to physiotherapy services.
  4. Knowledge of physiotherapy professional issues.
  5. Knowledge of a variety of physiotherapy interventions.
  6. Knowledge of pathologies and current medical management of commonly occurring conditions.
  7. Knowledge of outcome measure tools.
  8. Knowledge of the audit cycle and its uses.
