About the Role

We are seeking compassionate and empathetic individuals to join our team as Volunteer Ward Companions at our Glasgow Hospice. As a Volunteer Ward Companion, you will play a vital role in providing emotional support and companionship to patients and their families, enhancing their experience and making a positive impact on their lives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a listening ear and emotional support to patients and their families
  • Allow family members or carers to take a break while spending time with their loved one
  • Signpost patients and families to other services as appropriate
  • Support the evaluation of the service by writing brief reports on each visit
  • Keep staff informed of any changes or significant happenings related to patients or others
  • Attend training, support, and supervision sessions as required
  • Represent the Companion Service positively to those you interact with
  • Carry out support sessions at agreed times
Requirements
  • Friendly, sensitive, and a good listener
  • Patience, empathy, self-awareness, and emotional stability
  • Excellent listening skills and ability to build rapport with others
  • Commitment and reliability, with the ability to keep appointments and volunteer for up to 3 hours a week
  • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality
  • Flexibility and sensitivity to individual needs
  • Mature perspective on life and death
  • Willingness to learn and operate within the boundaries of the role

What We Ask of You
  • Provide two references from non-family members and relevant documents related to the role
  • Adhere to all charity policies and guidelines
