West London NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated and experienced Mental Health Specialist to join our dynamic team. This role will focus on providing comprehensive assessments and interventions for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) within the context of mental health.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively across acute and community mental health services in Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing, and Hounslow. This position also includes outreach opportunities to other teams as needed.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough assessments of individuals with ASD experiencing mental health challenges, considering their biopsychosocial needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans that address both mental health concerns and the unique needs of autistic individuals.
  • Provide evidence-based interventions, incorporating a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to each person's circumstances.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and therapists.
  • Advocate for the needs of autistic individuals within the healthcare system.
Qualifications & Experience:

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced professional with a passion for working with autistic individuals.

  • Essential Criteria:
  • Professional qualification in mental health (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Mental Health Nurse (RMN), Clinical Associate Psychologist (CAP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (BABCP accredited), Arts Therapist).
  • Current registration with the relevant professional body (HCPC, NMC, BPS, BABCP).
  • Post-qualification experience in Mental Health and/or Autism and/or Learning Disabilities.
  • Experience of working with autistic people.
  • Knowledge of mental health difficulties and a holistic approach to understanding an individual's presentation within the context of wider biopsychosocial aspects.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how mental health difficulties can impact on a person's ability to complete day-to-day activities.
  • Principles of clinical governance.
  • Clinical and environmental risk assessment and safety planning.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Training relevant to working with autistic people (such as sensory integration, Social Stories).
  • Training in positive approaches to behaviours of concern.
  • Lived experience of autism, either as an autistic person or carer/supporter.
  • Experience of supervision of students and staff.
  • Experience of delivering training/teaching.
  • Experience of undertaking sensory assessments and sensory-based interventions.
  • Clinical/case supervision training. An understanding of trauma informed care.
  • Knowledge of sensory differences/sensory integration and how this might impact on a person's experience of care.
