Nuclear Defence Ordnance and Munitions Specialist
2 months ago
Position Overview
Are you interested in contributing to critical Defence matters and enhancing the national security of the United Kingdom? The Ordnance, Munitions & Explosives (Level 6) Degree Apprenticeship program presents a significant opportunity for you.
Since its inception in April 2016, the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) has been pivotal in delivering nuclear capabilities that deter threats and safeguard our nation. The DNO is responsible for overseeing all defence nuclear operations (excluding active operations) and plays a crucial role in providing nuclear deterrence, sponsoring the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, and advising on UK nuclear policy and international collaboration.
The UK's independent nuclear deterrent has been a cornerstone of national security for over six decades, designed to counter the most severe threats to our safety and that of our NATO allies. To maintain a credible and effective nuclear deterrent, we are developing four new nuclear-armed submarines, known as the Dreadnought Class, alongside replacing our nuclear warheads. These modernization initiatives showcase cutting-edge technology and exemplify the capabilities of British industry.
At DNO, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, recognizing that varied perspectives and experiences lead to enhanced decision-making, creativity, and innovation. We celebrate differences and ensure our workforce feels supported, included, and empowered.
Role Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will possess a strong desire to learn, a curious mindset, and a logical approach to problem-solving. Self-motivation and the ability to learn from both practical and theoretical experiences are essential. This program demands dedication to complete the five-year apprenticeship and achieve a Level 6 degree qualification. If you meet these criteria, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.
The Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE) comprises various government and industry organizations that support the UK's nuclear deterrent. This includes the personnel, programs, and entities within government and industry that contribute to the UK's nuclear capabilities.
Apprenticeship Details
The Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) Level 6 Professional Degree (BEng) Apprenticeship emphasizes the Safety pathway within the Engineering function, incorporating elements of Nuclear competencies. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David administers the course, with off-the-job learning conducted on a block release basis. You will spend approximately three and a half months each year at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Swansea, with the first block being longer than usual.
Candidate Profile
As an OME Safety Case apprentice, your responsibilities will include coursework in support of your BEng Degree qualification, funded by the Ministry of Defence, and on-the-job training for professional development. You will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals in a high-hazard engineering environment, developing essential technical skills and competencies.
Key skills to be developed include:
- Supporting projects led by our safety professionals during work-based placements across the UK.
- Writing and analyzing technical documentation.
- Participating in site visits and relevant conferences.
- Acquiring knowledge and demonstrating the skills required for the safety pathway.
Location and Support
Your primary duty station will be at RNAD Coulport, with opportunities for work-based training placements across various MOD, military, and industry establishments throughout the UK, focusing on nuclear safety. Accommodation, travel, and subsistence costs for detached duty will be covered.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will receive support from the Early Careers team, including a mentor to enhance your understanding of the DNE and MOD operations. An Apprentice Liaison Officer will also assist in bridging academic studies with workplace learning.
Travel Requirements
Regular travel across the UK will be necessary for academic studies, work placements, and apprenticeship events, with all associated costs covered by the MOD.
Compensation
The starting salary for this position is £24,985 at AO level, with a regrading process at the three-year mark to assess your suitability for continuing the apprenticeship and potential regrading.
Your contracted hours will be 37 hours per week, with additional study required outside of these hours to fulfill academic obligations. Continuous professional development will be supported to maintain your skills and professional accreditations.
Qualifications
To be eligible for the apprenticeship, candidates must possess:
- A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above, including mandatory subjects: Maths and English Language.
- 2 A Levels (or equivalent) at Grade C or above, preferably in STEM or technology-based subjects.
All qualifications must be disclosed as part of the pre-employment checks.
Benefits
In addition to the salary, the Ministry of Defence contributes towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Additional benefits include:
- Tailored learning and development opportunities.
- Flexible working options.
- A culture that promotes inclusion and diversity.
- 25 days of annual leave, increasing to 30 days after five years of service.
- Access to on-site gym facilities.
