Job Title: KS2 Teaching Assistant

Reports to: Class Teacher / Head of Year / SEN Coordinator / Deputy Headteacher

Job Purpose:

To provide educational, social, and developmental support to pupils in Key Stage 2, under the guidance of the class teacher and other senior staff members.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Classroom Support:

    • Assist the class teacher in planning and delivering educational activities, ensuring a well-structured and engaging learning environment.
    • Support pupils in small groups or on a one-to-one basis as required, promoting individualized learning and development.
    • Help manage classroom behavior and maintain a positive learning atmosphere, fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity.
    • Prepare and organize teaching materials and resources, ensuring they are accessible and effective for pupils.
    • Assist with the assessment of pupils' work and progress, providing valuable insights for teachers and informing future learning plans.
  2. Pupil Support:

    • Support the emotional and social development of pupils, creating a safe and nurturing learning environment that promotes well-being and confidence.
    • Help pupils with additional needs, including those with special educational needs (SEN), ensuring they have equal access to learning activities and opportunities.
    • Supervise pupils during break times, lunchtimes, and on school trips, maintaining a watchful eye on their safety and well-being.
    • Encourage good behavior and respect among pupils, adhering to the school's behavior policies and promoting a positive school culture.
  3. Administrative Tasks:

    • Maintain accurate records of pupils' progress and any incidents, providing valuable data for teachers and school administrators.
    • Assist in the preparation of displays and the organization of the classroom, ensuring a tidy and welcoming environment for pupils.
    • Provide clerical support to the teacher, such as photocopying, filing, and record-keeping, freeing up time for more critical tasks.
  4. Communication:

    • Liaise with parents, carers, and other professionals regarding pupils' progress and any concerns, maintaining open and effective communication channels.
    • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to school events and activities, demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and school community.
    • Communicate effectively with pupils, providing clear instructions and constructive feedback that promotes learning and development.
  5. Professional Development:

    • Attend relevant training sessions and professional development opportunities, staying up-to-date with best practices and educational trends.
    • Stay informed about current educational practices and policies, ensuring a deep understanding of the curriculum and teaching methods.
    • Reflect on personal practice and set targets for improvement, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth.
  6. Health and Safety:

    • Ensure the welfare and safety of pupils at all times, adhering to school policies and procedures regarding health and safety, safeguarding, and child protection.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Essential:

    • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics, demonstrating a strong foundation in core subjects.
    • Relevant experience working with children in an educational setting, showcasing a commitment to supporting young learners.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills, essential for building strong relationships with pupils, parents, and colleagues.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating a collaborative approach to teaching and learning.
  • Desirable:

    • Teaching Assistant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools), demonstrating a higher level of expertise and training.
    • Experience working with children with SEN, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
    • First Aid certification, ensuring a safe and responsive approach to pupil care.
    • Knowledge of the KS2 curriculum, demonstrating a deep understanding of educational content and pedagogy.
