Job Responsibilities
This recruitment is for the Pine Chapel Area Headquarters, supporting operations related to the Hampton Roads Harbor Tunnel (HRHT). We are looking for individuals who can effectively manage power tools and heavy machinery, including but not limited to chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, motor graders, and tractors with attachments. As a maintenance operator, your responsibilities will include:
- Responding to emergency roadway situations and severe weather conditions to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal, as well as other hazardous road conditions.
- Attending work zone training, preparing work zones, and executing traffic control measures.
- Demonstrating proper work site protection techniques by identifying workplace safety hazards, suggesting improvements, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, and maintaining current knowledge of safety regulations and equipment usage.
- Participating as an active team member performing manual labor tasks such as clearing drainage, cutting brush, patching potholes, and completing road maintenance projects.
- Conducting pre-trip inspections, performing preventive maintenance, and operating both power tools and light to heavy equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to operate and maintain equipment similar to that used in highway maintenance and construction activities.
- Capability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to read and follow both oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively.
- Proficiency in the operation and preventive maintenance of handheld and power tools.
- Skill in operating and maintaining light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Ability to obtain a CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain compliance thereafter.
- Willingness to work in inclement weather and respond to emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Safety shoes are required.
Additional Considerations
- Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
- Experience in heavy manual labor and equipment operation, such as dump trucks, tractors, and loaders.
- Experience in performing basic preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Familiarity with methods and materials used in highway maintenance.
- Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal and accident clean-up.
- A high school diploma or GED is preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
- Flagging certification is advantageous.

Note: All drivers hired without a valid CDL are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers to complete FMCSA-approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before obtaining a CDL or endorsement.
This position requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense.
