Position Overview

We are pleased to announce a rewarding opportunity to become a part of our dedicated and collaborative team of Speech and Language Therapists and Assistants at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

This role, classified as a band 6 position, will focus on overseeing a specific caseload of children and adolescents with intricate neuro-disabilities, ranging from ages 3 to 19.

The successful candidate will address the communication, nutritional, and oral sensory-motor requirements of these young individuals, working closely with their educational teams, families, and the broader Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). The MDT at our organization comprises occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, nursing staff, pediatricians, clinical scientists, dental professionals, rehabilitation engineers, and social care personnel.

In addition to school-based work, there will be opportunities to engage in various settings on-site, including residential facilities and clinics.

We are open to considering part-time or flexible working arrangements, including term-time only options.

Key Responsibilities

The postholder will be responsible for:

a) Conducting specialized assessments, diagnoses, and management of communication and oral-motor challenges for their assigned caseload.

b) Monitoring and revising dysphagia management plans for children and young people, with guidance from senior colleagues.

c) Designing, implementing, and evaluating interventions tailored to identified needs in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, which includes therapy assistants.

d) Actively participating in the Speech and Language Therapy team, contributing to service enhancement and team initiatives.

e) Engaging in audit and research activities as part of the multi-professional team.

f) Providing educational support to staff, parents, caregivers, educators, assistants, students, and other agencies as a member of the multi-professional team.

Communication and Collaboration

The postholder will:

a) Collaborate closely with the Speech and Language Therapy team, including the Team Lead and other specialists, to ensure high-quality service delivery.

b) Establish effective communication and rapport with children and young people on their caseload, who may have significant communication challenges.

c) Work alongside the wider professional MDT and educational staff to provide integrated, child-centered education and healthcare.

d) Discuss communication needs, nutritional challenges, and oral-motor skills with the MDT, collaborating to set appropriate targets and strategies.

e) Effectively convey complex information regarding children's healthcare and communication needs to a diverse audience, while comprehending the intricacies of each child's requirements.

f) Provide training and support for members of the multi-professional team, including therapists, assistants, educators, and volunteers as necessary.

g) Manage conflicts with the support of senior clinicians when required.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Recognized qualification in Speech and Language Therapy/MRCSLT.
  • HCPC Registration.

Desirable

  • Membership of RCSLT.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in relevant areas such as Dysphagia or Makaton signing.

Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in pediatrics or relevant experience.
  • Experience in conducting and interpreting assessments.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary collaboration.

Desirable

  • Understanding of the challenges faced by children with neuro-disabilities, including oral-motor difficulties.
  • Experience in educational settings and advising on special needs programming.
  • Experience in training or teaching students or staff.
  • Experience in contributing to the training of other speech and language therapists.
  • Experience in planning and organizing therapeutic programs.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to function effectively as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with children, families, and professionals.
  • Proficiency in information technology and word processing.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding issues related to children and young people.

Desirable

  • Ability to independently manage a caseload.
  • Evidence of continued learning in specialized areas.
  • Demonstrated skills in managing complex caseloads.
  • Evidence of further training in areas such as Dysphagia, Augmentative Communication, and Makaton signing.
