Postdoctoral Research Associate in Global Glacier Modelling

We are seeking an exceptional Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to our research project, The Big Thaw, which aims to improve measurements and modelling of seasonal snow in high-mountain regions, understand timescales and potential trajectories for change for existing glacier ice, snow and meltwater resources, and determine frequency of extreme wet and dry years in the mountain cryosphere.
Key Responsibilities- Develop an effective coupling and calibration strategy using the Factorial Snow Model (FSM) to determine the surface mass balance and runoff of high-mountain glaciers.
- Deploy this strategy in targeted regions where fieldwork and regional climate modelling is being carried out.
- Interface with climate modellers who will provide meteorological inputs for the coupled model and with hydrological modellers who will use glacier coverage and runoff as inputs.
- PhD (or nearing completion) in global glacier modelling or computational geoscience.
- Extensive knowledge of Python is essential, and detailed experience developing within the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) is highly desirable.
- Ability to work efficiently both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Experience in analysing and interpreting model/observational data, including assessment of uncertainties.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
You will join a team of investigators in the Schools of GeoScience at the University of Edinburgh, with expertise in ice-sheet, glacier, and climate modelling. We welcome applications from everyone irrespective of gender or ethnic group. Appointment will be based on merit alone.
