Job Purpose

Support the University's My Medic Learning Development Unit as an Occupational Psychologist, providing expert advice, guidance, and support, and leading projects within this area. Specifically, Occupational Psychology support for students within the School of Medicine.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Duties

  1. Provide professional advice and guidance on Occupational Psychology processes and procedures to internal and external customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  2. Support distressed/vulnerable students who have complex issues offering support and signposting to other appropriate services.
  3. Investigate and analyse specific issues within Occupational Psychology and My MEDIC, creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within Occupational Psychology and My MEDIC.
  4. Ensure that the provision of Occupational Psychology is delivered whilst proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements.
  5. Collaborate with others in order to make recommendations for developing established processes and procedures.
  6. Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University's Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
  7. Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve Centre for Medical Education and My MEDIC objectives.
  8. Develop and deliver Occupational Psychology training for the Centre for Medical Education and My MEDIC when required.
  9. Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support My Medic.
  10. Instruct and guide other employees across the University regarding the application of Occupational Psychology practices as required.

General Duties

  1. Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  2. Abide by University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity.
  3. Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.
  4. Occasional travel throughout Wales to support Medical students.
Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  1. Chartered Occupational Psychologist and / or Membership of Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and / or British Psychological Society (BPS) or similar relevant qualification.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  1. Substantial experience of working within Occupational Psychology in a student/client facing environment and demonstrable knowledge of key advances within Occupational Psychology.
  2. Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within Occupational Psychology to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.
  3. IT Literate and experience of using MS office along with experience in developing new processes and procedures as required.

  1. Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people both at an individual level and in groups.
  2. Ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving

  1. Ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions.
  2. Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals.
  3. Ability to use initiative to work unsupervised, seeking guidance as appropriate.

Other

  1. A willingness to undertake further training and development.
Desirable Criteria

  1. BPS Certificate of Competence in Testing & Registered test user – Occupational, Personality.
  2. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.
  3. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
  4. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Qualified.
