About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Transportation Assistant to join our School Transport team at West Sussex County Council. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of vulnerable adults and school children with special needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel to and from schools and other venues, in minibuses, cars, and taxis, to transport passengers safely and securely.
  • Ensure the safe boarding and alighting of passengers from vehicles and their safe delivery to their destination.
  • Work collaboratively with drivers and other passenger assistants to provide a smooth and efficient transportation experience.
  • Interpret situations and events as they arise to solve problems concerning the wellbeing of passengers or the smooth running of the journey.
  • Fasten seat belts, attach booster seats, and ensure that passengers are properly seated.
  • Work in conjunction with the driver and other passenger assistants to ensure that all equipment, such as wheelchairs, is carefully stowed and secured when in transit.
  • Communicate effectively with adults and children with special needs, their carers, family members, and teachers to ensure their health and wellbeing are met.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with adults and children with special needs.
  • High levels of patience and sensitivity to deal effectively with adults and children with medical or behavioural needs.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Able to understand and communicate in basic non-verbal signals.
  • A basic understanding of Makaton to communicate with passengers with learning difficulties.
  • Previous experience working with or caring for children or adults, including voluntary work, paid work, or family commitments.
  • Knowledge of how to operate and secure items such as booster seats, wheelchairs, and similar devices.
  • Basic first aid training.
