Job Purpose

The role aims to enhance the academic writing capabilities of postgraduate researchers at the University of Glasgow, particularly those for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL-PGRs). This is achieved by leading the creation and implementation of a comprehensive framework of high-quality initiatives tailored to support EAL-PGRs and their supervisors in becoming proficient, independent academic writers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead the planning, development, delivery, quality assurance, and enhancement of a suite of learning and development activities designed to improve EAL-PGR writing, aligning with the strategic goals of the Research Culture and Researcher Development Portfolio.

  2. Collaborate across the Research Culture and Researcher Development portfolio to integrate EAL-PGR writing support into existing delivery frameworks and communications.

  3. Ensure a balanced approach to various writing development modalities, including workshops, individual consultations, digital resources, and writing festivals, to effectively meet the needs of EAL-PGRs.

  4. Provide specialized support for peer-to-peer learning and researcher-led groups focused on academic writing, such as writing retreats and mentoring programs.

  5. Design and conduct training for PGR Supervisors, working collaboratively with colleagues to enhance their communication skills with EAL-PGRs.

  6. Engage with University-wide, College, and School services to create a cohesive support system for researchers, participating in relevant committees and project teams to promote consistent, high-quality writing support.

  7. Stay informed about the evolving landscape of academic writing and publication, building strong internal and external networks to share insights and best practices from the higher education sector.

  8. Act as a credible advisor, providing targeted intelligence to inform effective actions on writing initiatives that align with the University's research strategy.

  9. Foster a collaborative team environment by being communicative, trustworthy, and respectful in partnerships.

  10. Ensure the mission of Research Services is well understood and supported through the systematic collection and storage of relevant data, along with regular updates on project statuses and portfolio information.

  11. Work alongside the Research Services leadership team to develop an efficient and responsive service that aligns with the University's mission and operational strategies.

  12. Contribute to team meetings and initiatives, sharing information promptly and maintaining transparency in decision-making processes.

  13. Identify and pursue opportunities for ongoing professional development for both yourself and colleagues within the broader Research Culture and Researcher Development portfolio.

  14. Perform additional duties as assigned, consistent with the role's grade level, prioritizing tasks in collaboration with management and stakeholders.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience Knowledge/ Qualifications Essential:
  • A1 PhD.
  • A2 Comprehensive understanding of academic and EAL writing support within Higher Education.
  • A3 In-depth knowledge of academic publishing processes, thesis requirements, and research funding applications across various disciplines.
  • A4 Strong grasp of digital literacy and academic integrity issues related to writing.
  • A5 Awareness of the emotional and wellbeing challenges faced by doctoral candidates and their impact on EAL-PGR writing.
  • A6 Familiarity with theories of academic literacies, adult learning, and instructional design, including the role of technology in effective training.
Skills Essential:
  • C1 Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • C2 Proficient in IT and relevant software applications.
  • C3 Strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with PGRs, research staff, and academic personnel.

Experience Essential:
  • E1 Extensive experience in teaching or supporting academic writing in Higher Education.
  • E2 Proven track record in developing and delivering workshops and online resources for research writing support.
  • E3 Experience in utilizing literature and strategic drivers to inform practice.
  • E4 Background in organizing large-scale events or comprehensive development programs.
  • E5 Experience in crafting communication strategies to raise awareness of initiatives and events.
