London, Greater London, United Kingdom Stephenson Harwood LLC Full time
What We Offer

At Stephenson Harwood LLC, we provide an environment where individuality is celebrated, and there are no limits to your potential. You will have the opportunity to take charge of your career and engage in open dialogues about your professional journey. As part of a forward-thinking firm with a clear vision for sustainable growth, you will gain early responsibility and play a vital role in expanding our business. Expect a competitive and equitable compensation package, along with recognition based on comprehensive performance metrics. This is a part of our internal commitment to you, known as The Deal, which outlines the relationship between the firm and its employees.

Your Expectations:
  • Competitive salary and a variety of family-friendly policies
  • Life insurance, private health, and dental coverage for you and your family
  • A selection of flexible benefits, including gym discounts and retail vouchers
  • Access to tech, cycling, and electric vehicle schemes
  • Opportunities to support the firm's selected charity through volunteering initiatives
  • A comprehensive wellbeing strategy focusing on preventative health measures and support for physical and mental health challenges, covering four key areas: physical, emotional, financial, and social wellbeing.
The Role
Your primary focus will be on litigation and arbitration cases. Litigation will generally occur before the Commercial Court in London, with potential coordination of proceedings in various jurisdictions. Arbitration may involve institutional frameworks (typically ICC, LCIA, or SIAC), LMAA Terms, or ad hoc arrangements.
You will enhance your legal expertise as a contract lawyer, particularly concerning charterparty disputes and the transportation of goods, while gaining exposure to a diverse clientele. Additionally, you will expand your skill set to encompass drafting and advisory responsibilities.

The Opportunity
In light of the ongoing expansion of our practice, we are looking for skilled and experienced associates to join our shipping team. You will provide counsel on various shipping, shipbuilding, and offshore disputes, as well as workout scenarios and bank enforcement matters.
Your work will involve a wide array of clients across Europe and globally, including some of the largest shipowners and charterers, their P&I and defense clubs, shipyards, and financial institutions.

With us, you will advance your career alongside esteemed colleagues on some of the most significant maritime and offshore issues in the sector, supported by a team that prioritizes collaboration, learning, and the development of your professional network and reputation.

Team Structure

Stephenson Harwood has recently established a new, international Maritime, Trade, and Offshore (MTO) practice group, integrating our ship finance, shipping, and trade and commodities expertise. This group provides a comprehensive range of services to clients engaged in the shipping, offshore, commodity, and finance sectors, offering a breadth of expertise that few firms can rival. Our practice is international, supported by specialized lawyers operating from various global offices.

We frequently handle high-profile disputes involving intricate legal and commercial challenges, often advising on cross-border and jurisdictional matters, resulting in a substantial reservoir of experience in key maritime jurisdictions. Our clientele includes many of the world's foremost ship owners, shipyards, insurers, P&I clubs, energy service providers, commodity traders, and banks.

The size of our team, both in London and globally, combined with our extensive experience, positions us to advise on any shipping or trade-related issue, from the most complex marine incidents or financing arrangements to straightforward cargo claims or sale and purchase disputes.

Main Responsibilities

Daily case management responsibilities include:
  • Serving as the primary contact for clients, experts, and counsel
  • Drafting witness statements and other court/arbitration documents
  • Preparing inter partes correspondence
  • Conducting legal and procedural research and drafting advice
  • Participating in meetings and hearings
Marketing responsibilities include:
  • Creating legal articles and updates
  • Encouragement to develop your own professional network
  • Engaging in business development and profile-raising events (client networking events, seminars, presentations, etc.)
Most positions are hybrid, allowing colleagues to benefit from both office and remote work. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements as part of the application and interview process.

We are an equal opportunity employer, dedicated to fostering a diverse workforce. We do not discriminate based on age, gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, culture, or any other protected characteristics. Our aim is to cultivate a culture where everyone can express themselves and is valued for their unique strengths and perspectives.

Required Attributes/Skills
  • Qualified lawyer in England and Wales with litigation/arbitration experience (preferably including shipping or commodities work, or a strong interest in the sector)
  • Team-oriented mindset (we are a compact but growing team focused on support and cohesion)
  • Resilient and dynamic approach (ability to manage pressure across multiple workstreams)
  • Willingness to assume responsibility early on (with appropriate support)
  • Excellent academic and professional credentials
  • Active interest in business development opportunities
This job description is indicative and does not represent an exhaustive list of responsibilities. The firm reserves the right to modify or change responsibilities as needed to align with the firm's strategy and business requirements.
