Lead Platform Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to become a key member of our dedicated team responsible for designing and developing platforms and systems that support essential functions at Our Future Health. In this role, you will play a crucial part in enhancing our primary Analytics platform utilized throughout the organization, facilitating the integration of diverse data types and sources while promoting exemplary engineering practices within our analytics and scientific teams.

Your contributions will be vital in advancing our mission to enable groundbreaking health research involving a cohort of 5 million volunteers. You will engage with the entire platform lifecycle—from participant recruitment and ongoing data engagement to facilitating research through Trusted Research Environments. Our teams operate in an agile, cross-functional manner, adhering to modern software development methodologies while upholding our strong commitments to trust, privacy, and security.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in the design and evaluation of platform architecture and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate within cross-functional teams to create and launch innovative services.
  • Consult with partners or vendors on integrations and complex system requirements.
  • Work alongside product managers and stakeholders to gather needs, define technical specifications, and develop effective solutions.
  • Support colleagues through collaborative activities such as pairing, peer reviews, and coaching to achieve high standards and deliver quality software products.
  • Participate in collaborative sessions to refine requirements and formulate architectural proposals for upcoming projects.
  • Engage in reflective practices such as retrospectives or incident reviews, providing insights for improvement and driving positive change.
  • Take part in support rotations to monitor live systems, respond to incidents effectively, and assist operations teams, including customer support, which may involve being part of an on-call rotation.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess experience in several of the following areas:

  • Expertise in cloud DevOps/platform engineering practices, with a strong preference for Azure; familiarity with additional clouds such as AWS or GCP is advantageous.
  • Proven experience in coding with Python to production standards.
  • Experience in developing and deploying tools related to data pipelines and ETL processes.
  • Proficiency with cloud-native technologies, including Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Experience in designing, supporting, and troubleshooting large-scale production systems.
  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices, including unit testing, code reviews, design documentation, and strong debugging skills.
  • Experience implementing continuous integration and deployment tools and practices.
  • Background in agile methodologies, with a focus on code reviews and collaborative coding.
  • Ability to adapt and grow in a rapidly scaling organization.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to create diagrams, specifications, and documentation.
  • Experience collaborating closely with analysts and scientists on design principles and best practices.
  • Solid understanding of database concepts, modeling, SQL, and query optimization.
