Position Overview:

The role of the Mechanical Engineer involves comprehensive management of all mechanical systems within a prestigious research and development facility. The successful candidate will possess extensive knowledge of current Building Service Systems and will ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations and industry standards.

This position requires collaboration with the Supervisor and Contract Manager, acting as the primary mechanical engineer for the facility. The engineer will play a vital role in delivering engineering excellence across various services while also supporting the broader team and client with tasks that extend beyond mechanical expertise.

The working hours are structured around a 40-hour week, with site operations running from 07:00 to 18:00, necessitating early and late shifts. There will be occasions requiring out-of-hours work to fulfill statutory maintenance obligations and to provide necessary support for service providers. The engineer will also participate in an on-call rota for emergency situations.

Travel to a sister site will be required, with a company vehicle provided for this purpose.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain all building systems effectively and efficiently.
  • Issue necessary site permits as part of the Safe System of Work.
  • Complete Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive tasks, updating the electronic workflow system accordingly.
  • Conduct daily checks, report defects, and coordinate repairs through the facilities management helpdesk.
  • Identify and order materials required for timely installation.
  • Adhere to statutory and company health, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Implement and document statutory inspections accurately in designated logbooks.
  • Review and sign off on worksheets from specialist service providers, ensuring quality and escalating issues to the Supervisor.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping in all plant areas, workshops, and staff facilities.

The engineer will be expected to troubleshoot and manage all building systems, including but not limited to:

  • Building Management Systems and Electrical Monitoring.
  • HVAC Systems, including humidification.
  • Air Handling Units, Air Conditioning, and Chillers.
  • Knowledge of Variable Air Volume (VAV) and Fan Coil Units (FCU).
  • Domestic Water Services and Plumbing.
  • Pumps, Motors, and Variable Speed Drives.
  • Gas Boilers and Hot Water Calorifiers.

Required Skills:

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship or equivalent experience in Building Services.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with staff and clients at all levels.
  • Recognized qualification in mechanical engineering.
  • Experience using Building Management Systems (Trend).
  • Intermediate proficiency in Windows Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with PDA and tablet technology.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong numeracy and literacy skills, with experience in report writing.
  • Ability to adapt and collaborate with team members outside of their primary trade.

Qualifications:

  • C&G or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
  • NVQ Level 2 Equivalent in Plumbing and Heating Systems.
  • Certification in Pressure Systems Competencies.
  • Legionella Awareness – L8 ACOP.
  • FGAS or Gas Safe Certification.
  • Familiarity with current Health and Safety legislation related to safe working practices.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills with computer proficiency.
  • Valid Driving License.
