Job Title: Financial Accountant

Environmental Standards Scotland (ESS) is seeking a highly skilled Financial Accountant to join our Corporate Services and Communications team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records and reports.

The successful candidate will have excellent technical accounting skills, with experience in compiling year-end financial accounts for external audit. You will also have strong financial modelling skills using applications such as Microsoft Excel. In addition, you will have the ability to work on your own initiative, coping with the demands of a fast-changing environment where opportunities need to be quickly realised, whilst managing competing priorities and ensuring deadlines are met.

The Financial Accountant will be responsible for planning and preparing ESS's annual accounts in accordance with the Scottish Public Finance Manual (SPFM) and other accounting guidelines. You will also assist in the coordination of the annual external audit and liaise with external and internal reviews. Furthermore, you will continuously review and implement opportunities to raise reporting standards and improve operational effectiveness and consistency through process, technology, and/or people capability development.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of budgeting and financial management processes and reporting. You will also have excellent communication and presentation skills, with evidence of presenting complex information to senior managers. Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning and preparing ESS's annual accounts in accordance with the SPFM and other accounting guidelines
  • Assisting in the coordination of the annual external audit and liaising with external and internal reviews
  • Continuously reviewing and implementing opportunities to raise reporting standards and improve operational effectiveness and consistency through process, technology, and/or people capability development
  • Providing financial reporting to the ESS Board, Audit and Risk Committee, and Scottish Government, ensuring all reconciliations and other key controls are up-to-date

Requirements:

  • Professionally qualified accountant (CCAB professional accountancy body or equivalent) with up-to-date CPD
  • Excellent technical accounting skills and experience in compiling year-end financial accounts for external audit
  • Strong financial modelling skills using applications such as Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work on your own initiative and manage competing priorities
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
