Position Title: Curator of Natural Science (Job Share)

Salary Range: £34,834 - £36,648 (pro rata)

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Based at Leeds Discovery Centre with responsibilities across various museum sites.

As a Curator of Natural Science, you will play a vital role in disseminating your specialized knowledge to enhance understanding and appreciation of our collections among diverse audiences.

About You:

In this role, you will possess:

  • A specialization in at least one aspect of the Natural Science collection.
  • A comprehensive understanding of audience engagement, particularly in the context of museums and galleries.
  • The ability to cultivate strong working relationships with colleagues and partner organizations.
  • Knowledge of Collections Management practices.
  • A degree or professional qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience.

Role Overview:

The designated natural science collection encompasses approximately 800,000 specimens, showcasing a wide array of subjects and specimen types. As part of a job share, you will be accountable for the development, care, and interpretation of this significant collection, facilitating audience access and supporting educational initiatives.

This position is integral to the Collections & Programmes team, focusing on environmental responsibility and collaborative efforts with colleagues, external partners, and community groups to maximize the impact of our collections.

Job Purpose:

To oversee the development, care, access, and interpretation of relevant collections, and to create exhibitions, events, and educational activities that engage all community segments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the care and preservation of collections on display and in storage.
  • Collaborate with various teams to implement exhibitions and learning proposals.
  • Adhere to collections management standards and procedures.
  • Advise on acquisitions and maintain necessary collection records.
  • Manage Assistant Curators and volunteers as required.
  • Participate in the setup of exhibitions and displays.
  • Research and write accessible texts for exhibitions and publications.
  • Promote the service and advocate for the collections.
  • Work with the Commercial team to enhance commercial opportunities.
  • Engage in professional networks for self-development.
  • Contribute to innovative projects across the museum services.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies.
  • Promote equality and diversity in all interactions.

  • Experience in a museum or gallery setting.
  • Knowledge of current practices in collections management.
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of Leeds Museums and Galleries.
