About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Building Control Manager to join our team at SGS. As a key member of our Building Control department, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the team and ensuring that all building control functions are carried out in accordance with relevant legislation and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Team Management: Manage and lead a team of Building Control Surveyors and Technical Support staff, providing guidance and support to ensure that the team meets statutory requirements and performance targets.
  2. Legislative Guidance: Provide expert advice and guidance on building control legislation and regulations to the Building Control and Technical Support Teams.
  3. Quality Management: Implement and manage the ISO 9001 Quality Management System accreditation process to ensure a consistently high quality of service delivery to our customers.
  4. Dangerous Structures Response: Take an active role in the organisation, management, and participation of a dangerous structures response service, ensuring that it meets internal policy, statutory, and good practice requirements.
  5. Staff Development: Proactively manage staff development and training to ensure that the team has the requisite levels of knowledge, skills, and competency validation to perform their roles.
  6. Marketing Strategy: Work with the Head of Service to develop a marketing strategy to increase income and market share for the Building Control service.
  7. Deputisation: Deputise for the Head of Building Control and Local Land Charges in respect of these services and other services within the department as and when required.
  8. Financial Management: Ensure effective and timely forecasting and analysis of business and financial data to enable robust budget management and budget planning, minimising financial risks and maximising potential efficiencies.
  9. Risk Management: Contribute to the overall management of risk, ensuring that lines of accountability are clear and well understood, and systems are in place for monitoring, evaluating, and managing risks to secure the reputation of SGS.
  10. Procurement Strategies: Lead and develop procurement strategies for services and contracts to secure cost-effective outcomes, including contract development, negotiations, and regular review.
  11. Customer Focus: Provide professional and managerial support to the Head of Service to develop strategies and plans that identify and recommend improvements to transform service delivery, ensuring long-term management of the service is sustainable in terms of meeting legislative obligations, financial constraints, and key performance targets.
  12. Leadership and Motivation: Lead, motivate, and support Building Control team colleagues, setting the direction for the service, creating a culture of empowerment and trust, and undertaking line management duties of direct reports.
  13. Customer Reporting: Produce effective and efficient customer reporting tools and documents that demonstrate and promote the value of the Building Control service, maintaining systems to inform and receive feedback from customers, partners, suppliers, stakeholders, and employees.
  14. Carbon Reduction Plan: Support the delivery of the council's Carbon Reduction Plan, including proposing cost-effective solutions and taking measures within the Building Control Service to reduce consumption of water and energy and emission of greenhouse gases.
