Are you ready to take on the challenge of being a community-focused Speech and Language Therapist?

We are a close-knit and supportive team dedicated to delivering speech and language therapy services to adults within the community setting.

We seek a skilled and enthusiastic Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our team, where you will assess and treat individuals with various acquired and progressive neurological disorders, as well as non-neurological conditions and voice issues. This role offers a diverse and fulfilling experience, significantly enhancing our patients' quality of life.

Candidates must possess full dysphagia training and have a minimum of one year’s experience as a qualified Speech and Language Therapist.

This is a full-time position (WTE, hours per week), operating Monday to Friday, with no weekend shifts required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a comprehensive Speech and Language Therapy service across the community for adults facing communication and swallowing challenges, assessing and treating a variety of neurological and non-neurological conditions.
  • Conduct differential diagnoses of communication and swallowing difficulties through specialized clinical assessments, ensuring all interventions are based on thorough and accurate evaluations.
  • Develop and implement therapy programs and provide demonstrations to relevant parties (family, staff, visitors) to facilitate the transfer of new skills into everyday communication settings.
  • Utilize appropriate outcome measures to assess personal clinical effectiveness.
  • Accurately and promptly submit activity data using SystmOne, adhering to established guidelines and policies.
  • Oversee the work of junior SLTs, students, and assistants, ensuring delegated tasks are performed competently.
  • Engage in the development of risk management, quality standards, and Clinical Governance/audit projects, advising the clinical lead on any service planning or policy changes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the team to provide ongoing care for individuals with communication and/or swallowing difficulties in the community.
  • Manage and prioritize your clinical caseload effectively.
  • Conduct differential diagnoses of communication and swallowing challenges based on specialized assessments, ensuring interventions are well-founded.
  • Support patients in expressing their views and needs, enabling active participation in treatment planning.
  • Assess patients' communication skills to inform decisions regarding their capacity to consent to interventions.
  • Create clear individual care plans in line with clinical guidelines and best practices.
  • Utilize appropriate outcome measures to evaluate your clinical effectiveness.
  • Provide therapy programs and demonstrations to relevant parties to support skill transfer into broader communication contexts.
  • Adapt clinical practices to accommodate the needs of patients and caregivers, considering factors such as disability, culture, and education.
  • Ensure seamless transitions of care between agencies, providing comprehensive reports to other health professionals as required.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes in accordance with professional standards and local policies.
  • Share information responsibly while adhering to data protection guidelines.
  • Ensure the security and maintenance of equipment, upholding infection control and safety standards.
  • Participate in the development of risk management and quality standards for the SLT service.
  • Supervise the work of junior staff and ensure appropriate competency levels for delegated tasks.
  • Uphold high professional standards as outlined by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and the Health Professions Council (HPC).
  • Adhere to Speech and Language Therapy Operational Policy and Clinical Guidelines.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Recognized Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council.
  • Completion of RCSLT dysphagia competencies.

Desirable

  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Successful completion of a post-basic dysphagia course recognized by the RCSLT.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions for adult neurological speech and language disorders.
  • Awareness of national policies and current research relevant to the caseload.
  • Understanding of clinical governance principles and standards of record keeping.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with cultural and linguistic considerations in a multi-cultural caseload.

Additional Requirements

Essential

  • Ability to perform physical tasks related to treatment delivery.
  • Valid driving license and access to a vehicle for travel across sites.
