Equestrian Care Specialist for the Army

Windsor, Windsor and Maidenhead, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence employs a diverse workforce of over 50,000 Civil Servants, with approximately 7,000 dedicated to the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) across more than 300 locations. Our team encompasses a variety of roles, including trainers, human resources professionals, educators, and psychologists, as well as storekeepers, financial experts, project managers, and policy staff. Each role contributes significantly to the Army's operational success.

This role presents a unique opportunity to care for and maintain the horses that play a vital role in state ceremonial operations, both in central London and nationwide. As part of this dynamic position, you will support national interests by ensuring the horses of the Household Cavalry Mounted Unit are well-cared-for and impeccably presented for key public events.

We are dedicated to providing exceptional care for our horses and seek individuals who thrive in a collaborative environment, delivering the essential maintenance required. This position is both dynamic and rewarding, allowing you to utilize your equestrian skills to support some of the UK's most significant strategic objectives.

Due to the continuous care required for the horses, this role entails a commitment of 36 hours per week, distributed over six days.

Role Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be tasked with grooming, clipping, handling, feeding, and exercising Military Working Horses. A passion for ensuring these animals receive the highest level of care and attention is essential, as is the ability to present them for important ceremonial duties.

Your responsibilities will also include assisting the veterinary and farriery teams in restraining and managing various horse breeds, as well as administering basic daily treatments such as medication and physiotherapy exercises.

You will have the opportunity to exercise and train the horses, which will involve roadwork, cantering, lunging, and supporting rehabilitation programs. Maintaining the cleanliness of the stables and stable areas, while ensuring compliance with Health and Safety regulations, is also a critical aspect of the role.

Given the flexible and dynamic requirements of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, you will need to demonstrate initiative and work independently with minimal supervision, while occasionally meeting tight deadlines as part of a committed team.

Candidate Requirements

To uphold the high standards of care we expect for our horses, it is essential that our grooms:

  • Hold a Level 2 BHS qualification in Riding and Grooming, or an equivalent qualification (such as a Level 2 Equine Animal Care and Welfare Apprenticeship).
  • Possess recent and relevant experience in horse grooming, with a proven ability to ride horses of varying temperaments and undertake physically demanding tasks.
  • Demonstrate a proven ability to present horses to a high standard, including trimming, clipping, and mane and tail management.
  • Be competent in performing a range of stable duties.
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to the welfare of horses.

Due to the horses' need for continuous care, you will be required to work a four-week shift pattern that includes weekends and public holidays, with the possibility of overtime when unforeseen circumstances arise.

While a full UK driving license is desirable, it is not a formal requirement for this position.

Development Opportunities

The Ministry of Defence is committed to providing a wide range of professional and technical development opportunities, supporting staff in their career advancement.

In this role, there may be opportunities to pursue the Level 3 BHS qualification or equivalent, further enhancing your career development.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Ministry of Defence contributes significantly towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. The Army prides itself on being a supportive employer, promoting flexible working arrangements to help maintain a healthy work/life balance.

Additional benefits for Army Civil Servants include:

  • 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing to 30 days after five years of service.
  • A highly competitive pension scheme.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional skill development.
  • Alternative working patterns for many roles.
  • Access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), a free service designed to promote a productive and healthy work environment.
  • Enhanced parental and adoption leave.
  • 6 days of special leave per year for volunteering activities.

We believe in the potential of every individual to make a difference, and you will receive support to learn and advance in your career, including opportunities to work towards professional body membership or undertake a modern apprenticeship.

The central location of the barracks ensures easy accessibility via public transport, with potential onsite parking available. You will also have access to changing room facilities and an on-site canteen, with possible use of gym facilities.

Please note that expenses incurred for travel to interviews will not be reimbursed.

The Ministry of Defence is dedicated to providing a safe and healthy working environment, which includes educating staff on the benefits of a smoke-free workplace and supporting those who wish to quit smoking.

All applicants should be aware of the Ministry of Defence's policies regarding smoking and tobacco use within the working environment.
