Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a Child Protection Midwife to become a vital member of the Safeguarding Team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and highly driven individual who possesses extensive knowledge in Safeguarding, particularly within Maternity and ideally Neonatal services. The successful candidate will adopt a Think Family approach, reporting to and assisting the Lead Midwife for Safeguarding, while serving as a liaison between clinical staff and external agencies involved in the protection of children and child welfare.

The Child Protection Midwife will be a prominent and respected figure within the organization, providing specialized knowledge and guidance to clinical teams.

Main Responsibilities

  • Coordinate care for at-risk mothers and their families
  • Deliver safe and effective midwifery services
  • Maintain high standards of accurate documentation
  • Plan, allocate, and oversee the work of a team
  • Regularly take charge of the ward when working in a generic capacity
  • Assist the Senior Midwife in ensuring the highest quality of midwifery care
  • Ensure compliance with local safeguarding protocols and implement specialized care plans
  • Provide expert advice to staff caring for vulnerable women and their infants

The Directorate of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Neonatology operates from a facility that handles over 6800 births annually and serves as a Regional Tertiary Maternity Service, featuring a Level 3 Neonatal Unit with 44 cots. The Directorate also includes a tertiary Gynae-Oncology service and a developing Gynaecology Service, which encompasses an Assisted Conception Unit.

This position is offered on a fixed-term contract basis for a maximum duration of 12 months. The status of the fixed-term contract will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered practicing Midwife
  • Master's/Degree/Diploma in midwifery

Desirable

  • Additional training in Safeguarding
  • Training in Substance Misuse
  • Training in Domestic Abuse

Experience

Essential

  • Completion of all core competencies
  • Evidence of post-basic clinical placements in diverse settings
  • Experience working with women and families facing complex health and social challenges

Desirable

  • Experience caring for women with substance misuse issues
  • Experience with women who are homeless, asylum seekers, or victims of trafficking

Further Training

Essential

  • Confidence in a range of clinical skills, including cannulation and administering IV medications
  • Working knowledge of Safeguarding for Adults and Children
  • Antenatal Screening knowledge

Desirable

  • Leadership qualification
  • Familiarity with Family Common Assessment Framework (FCAF)
  • Knowledge of Audit C
  • Knowledge of DASH
