Job Title: Senior Teaching

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Technician to join our team at the University of Reading. As a Senior Technician, you will play a key role in supporting teaching and research in the School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Sciences.

About the Role

The successful candidate will have a strong background in the chemical analysis of soils, plants and water, with significant experience of operating, troubleshooting and maintaining analytical instrumentation. You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of a suite of wet chemistry and analytical laboratories, and will have the ability to train and demonstrate to staff and students, explain procedures and provide assistance with equipment and techniques where necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate, troubleshoot and maintain analytical instrumentation, including ICP-OES, GC, Elemental Analyser, Continuous Flow Analyser, Ion Chromatography and Cavity Ring Down Spectrophotometry.
  • Develop and implement laboratory procedures and protocols to ensure high-quality results and efficient laboratory operations.
  • Train and demonstrate laboratory techniques to staff and students, and provide assistance with equipment and techniques where necessary.
  • Collaborate with academic staff and researchers to support teaching and research activities.
  • Contribute to the development of laboratory policies and procedures, and participate in quality assurance and quality control activities.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A science degree, HND, NVQ4 (or equivalent) or basic professional qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Physical Geography, Geochemistry).
  • A broad knowledge across a range of laboratory techniques, used in Earth Systems & Environmental Science.
  • Significant experience of operating, troubleshooting and maintaining analytical instrumentation.
  • Ability to train and demonstrate to staff and students, explain procedures and provide assistance with equipment and techniques where necessary.
