Senior Biodiversity Specialist

Join the World Bank Group in a unique opportunity to contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. As a Senior Biodiversity Specialist, you will play a key role in the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Programming Division, working on program management, analytical, stakeholder engagement, and policy needs.
Key Responsibilities:- Participate in the successful execution of the Programming Division work programs and business model, including country resource programming, strategic work in regional and country dialogues, resource programming with GEFSEC Regional Team(s), GEF Agencies, and Countries.
- Manage reviews of project proposals to be financed by the GEF Trust, according to the agreed project review criteria, provide guidance on major issues involved in the development of project proposals and assist in overall preparation of work programs to be presented to council.
- Support the development and implementation of strategies and work programs to enhance GEF's impact and support the management of GEF's portfolio of ongoing projects through supervision, monitoring, and evaluation activities with GEF Agencies and countries.
- Support the development and implementation of results-based management (RBM) and the integration of knowledge management in RBM, operational processes and procedures.
- Participate in the political outreach to relevant countries in international fora, in particular with the Rio Convention (UN CBD) and other related international instruments, as directed.
- Provide quality inputs to the CEO and senior management on country and thematic briefings, talking points, speeches, analytical/strategic documents.
- Undertake additional Biodiversity-related duties as agreed with the Manager of the Programming Division.
- The candidate should possess a Master's Degree with at least eight years of experience, or a Ph.D. with five years of experience in the field of biodiversity, natural resources management/environmental sciences, economics, or other relevant disciplines.
- At least 5 years of work experience supporting and/or managing biodiversity projects and programs in developing countries.
- Experience in the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the CBD and/or the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the CBD would be a plus.
- Demonstrated capacity to synthesize information and produce scientific reports, narratives, analyses, and strategies.
- Ability to develop, utilize and analyze results frameworks, metrics and key performance indicators, and data related to biodiversity status, trends, priorities and outcomes.
- Experience with engaging and building respectful partnerships with stakeholders, international organizations, development agencies, scientific and technical bodies, developing country counterparts, and NGOs.
- Working knowledge of the operations of the Global Environment Facility and its Agencies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including ability to communicate complex issues to a wide range of audiences. Second language (French, Spanish or Portuguese) is highly desirable.
