Key Responsibilities

As part of your role, you will need to review the complete Job Description and Person Specification documents associated with this position.

The journey of day surgery encompasses the entire process from patient admission to discharge.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective care for patients during the perioperative and postoperative phases.
  • Working across various areas of the service, including pre-operative assessments, surgical scrub, anaesthetic assistance, recovery, and post-operative care.
  • Actively participating as a vital member of the surgical team and engaging with other healthcare professionals.
  • Supervising and mentoring students and junior staff members.
  • Coordinating the patient’s journey from admission through to discharge.

About Our Unit

The Ambulatory Care unit at Nottingham University Hospitals is a dynamic and well-structured facility that caters to patients with a variety of surgical needs. Our department features multiple areas where staff are encouraged to rotate and gain diverse experiences.

We handle a wide range of complex surgical cases across various specialties, including General, Breast, Gynaecology, Urology, and Plastic Surgery. Additionally, we operate a daily Pain Clinic equipped with treatment and discharge rooms.

Our unit is equipped with two operating theatres, two treatment rooms, a three-bay recovery area, and a 15-bay ward, all managed by a dedicated and friendly team of experienced professionals.

If you are eager to broaden your nursing expertise within the day surgery environment and provide care for patients with diverse clinical conditions, this role is ideal for you.

It is essential to deliver the highest standard of individualized and holistic patient care while collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to ensure quality service for patients and their families.

Job Duties

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care throughout the perioperative period.
  • Supporting patients during invasive procedures and adapting care plans based on ongoing assessments of their condition.
  • Facilitating the safe transfer and positioning of patients as necessary.
  • Coordinating with ward staff and other professionals to ensure timely and safe patient transfers to and from the theatre.
  • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to arrange appropriate ongoing care for postoperative patients.
  • Assuming the role of scrub/anaesthetic practitioner within the surgical team.
  • Ensuring safety checks of instruments and items within the surgical field.
  • Preparing surgical equipment and ensuring the safe transfer of items onto the sterile field.
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and records in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Participating in clinical audits to enhance patient care quality.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Current level one NMC registration or HPC registration part 1.
  • Experience in supervising non-registered staff and students.
  • Ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritize, and evaluate patient care.

Desirable:

  • Diploma or degree in health/nursing-related studies.
  • Evidence of mentoring experience.
  • Participation in link nurse or project work.
