Position Overview

As a vital member of a diverse and collaborative team, the Non-Medical Prescriber will play a key role in delivering recovery-focused interventions for individuals facing challenges related to substance use. This position involves:

Providing care to clients seeking assistance.

Initiating and modifying prescriptions for opiate and alcohol substitute therapies, along with other relevant medications.

Leading the development of the prescribing clinic, serving as a resource for colleagues and partner organizations regarding prescribing matters.

Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a Non-Medical Prescriber to conduct prescribing assessments and reviews with service users while collaborating with a supportive multidisciplinary team. Effective partnership and meticulous attention to detail are essential.

The ideal candidate will have experience engaging with individuals facing multiple and/or complex needs and demonstrate a proactive approach to problem-solving. Familiarity with one or more of the following areas is required:

  • Substance Misuse
  • Mental Health
  • Homelessness
  • Criminal Justice

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing, and evaluating treatment and interventions for service users.
  • Conducting clinical assessments to determine service user needs and planning care accordingly.
  • Diagnosing and managing care on an individual basis, integrating both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment methods in collaboration with the Recovery Coordinator.
  • Identifying and assessing the suitability of service users for inpatient detoxification when appropriate.
  • Proactively reviewing and managing clinical treatment plans for service users.
  • Prescribing and reviewing medications for therapeutic effectiveness based on service user needs and adhering to evidence-based practices and protocols.
  • Supporting service users in adhering to prescribed treatments.
  • Providing information and guidance on prescribed, illicit, and over-the-counter medications, including potential side effects and interactions.
  • Prioritizing health issues and intervening appropriately in complex or urgent situations, seeking guidance from the Clinical Lead as necessary.
  • Assessing and referring patients with mental health needs.
  • Updating and referring service users for vaccination and immunization programs while promoting healthy lifestyle choices.

Communication Skills

Utilizing sensitive communication styles to ensure service users are well-informed and consent to treatment.

Effectively communicating with service users and their families, anticipating communication barriers and recognizing the need for alternative methods to accommodate diverse backgrounds and preferences.

Maintaining effective communication within the organization and with external stakeholders, advocating for service users and colleagues as needed.

Being aware of available support and guidance, providing information in accessible formats to all service users, and referring when necessary.

Understanding and adhering to relevant regulatory codes of conduct, organizational policies, and national prescribing competencies.

Producing accurate and complete records of consultations in compliance with legislation and organizational policies.

Prioritizing, organizing, and managing your workload to maintain high-quality standards.

Delivering care in accordance with clinical guidelines and evidence-based practices.

Evaluating the effectiveness of care delivery through self and peer review, benchmarking, and formal evaluation, actively participating in the annual appraisal process.

Initiating and participating in the maintenance of quality governance systems and processes across the organization.

Utilizing the audit cycle to assess the quality of individual and team performance, implementing improvements as necessary.

Collaborating with other clinical teams to share learning, enhance healthcare quality, and respond to local and national policies and initiatives.

Assessing the impact of policy implementation on care delivery.

Understanding and applying legal frameworks that support the identification of vulnerable individuals and being aware of statutory health procedures and local guidelines.

Leadership Responsibilities

Taking responsibility for personal learning and performance, including participating in regular clinical and peer supervision as part of the Non-Medical Prescriber forum.

Supporting staff development and delivering training as needed.

Promoting the Non-Medical Prescriber role among team members and stakeholders.
