Job Summary

The Custodian I - Facilities Maintenance position at Southeast Community College is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of facilities, including restrooms, classrooms, laboratories, and offices. This is a full-time regular position with normal work hours scheduled between 3:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, based on a 40-hour workweek.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean Designated Restrooms Daily: Clean and sanitize sinks, urinals, toilets, showers, wastebaskets, partitions, and walls; clean mirrors, dispensers, and floors; replace toilet paper and towels; and remove garbage/trash.
  • Clean Classrooms, Laboratories, and Offices Daily: Sweep and mop floors, wash windows, clean walls, dust furniture and fixtures, vacuum carpet, strip walls, and scrub floors.
  • Move Office Equipment and Supervise: Assist in moving tables, chairs, desks, etc. out of and back into rooms to facilitate cleaning. Make minor repairs on furniture and facilities, and supervise student workers. Drive light trucks and automobiles as directed.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist with snow removal from steps and walks around buildings.
  • Perform other related duties within the division/program as assigned.
  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
Requirements
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow directions related to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to communicate with supervisor, campus staff, and student workers – both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and ability to use safe lifting and moving techniques.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely operate power cleaning equipment after receiving instructions.
  • Ability/skill to drive automobiles and light trucks.
  • Ability to use basic computer skills.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to work and move in a standing or slightly stooped position over extended periods of time (90-95 percent of work time). Ability to work and walk on hard surfaces (mostly concrete). Possess hand/eye coordination and physical strength necessary to operate power cleaning equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, carpet cleaners, vacuum cleaners, etc. Ability to perform functions, where required, wearing safety glasses. Ability to work in restroom areas with gasses/fumes from cleaning/sanitation chemicals. Ability to lift 50 pounds, carry 20 pounds, and slide objects weighing 60 pounds on a regular basis. Ability to climb on ladders and/or scaffolding. Ability to operate hydraulic lift to heights of 24'.
  • The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Qualifications
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • One (1) year of successful experience in the custodial area.
  • Ability to work with cleaning chemicals.
  • Good noncommercial driver's license history to indicate a habit of safe driving.
Desired Qualifications
  • Janitorial/custodial/building maintenance experience.
  • Ability/skill to drive automobiles and light trucks.
