As a pivotal member of the nursing leadership team, you will be responsible for guiding and mentoring staff within the Paediatric Emergency Department, serving as a role model while working closely with the multidisciplinary team.

You will assist senior nursing leadership with management responsibilities, ensuring the delivery of quality services. Participation in educational initiatives throughout the unit and the broader hospital is expected to maintain high standards.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be accountable for assessing care requirements and developing, implementing, and evaluating care plans as part of the multidisciplinary team from admission through to discharge, utilizing evidence-based practices. Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering care in alignment with regulatory standards and departmental policies.
  • Promptly addressing safeguarding concerns.
  • Engaging in audits to assess effectiveness and integrating findings into practice.
  • Contributing to the achievement of quality and financial objectives, both locally and nationally.

  • Maintain clinical expertise and oversee advanced emergency care skills.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to identify and enhance nursing practices and service delivery.
  • Support the monitoring and achievement of departmental performance targets.
  • Participate in the recruitment and onboarding of new nursing and healthcare assistant staff.
  • Establish and uphold acceptable care standards in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Challenge practices to ensure optimal patient treatment.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, addressing any hazards or incidents promptly.
  • Facilitate staff appraisals and support the achievement of personal development objectives.
  • Engage in ongoing education and training to enhance professional knowledge.
  • Adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.
  • Stay informed about local and national policies regarding emergency care.
  • Comply with hospital policies related to complaints and major incidents.
  • Reflect critically on personal performance through clinical supervision and participate in appraisals.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse - Child (Part 1) or equivalent.
  • Level 3 Safeguarding certification.
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) certification.
  • Completion of Children's A&E Course.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Leadership training.
  • Management experience.
  • Competence in Manchester Triage.

Essential Experience

  • Post-registration qualification in Children's Emergency Nursing or equivalent.
  • Current experience in Emergency Nursing.
  • Demonstrated emergency nursing expertise.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential Skills

  • Competence in clinical documentation, including IV drug administration and minor injury assessment.
  • Ability to lead nursing care in various areas of the emergency department.
  • Specialized knowledge in emergency care to provide high-quality clinical services.
  • Capacity to anticipate workload changes and allocate staff effectively.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with patients and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven leadership abilities to guide the emergency nursing team.
  • Capability to support relatives in challenging situations.
  • Aptitude for recognizing and defusing potential conflicts.
  • Proficiency in IT systems and awareness of information importance.
  • Understanding of safeguarding issues related to children and families.
