Job Overview
We are looking for a dedicated and motivated Clinical Microbiology Scientist/Trainee Microbiology Specialist to become a vital member of the Microbiology team at our esteemed organization. Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art analysers, ensuring high-quality diagnostics and patient care.
The laboratory provides a comprehensive range of tests and is accredited by UKAS to ISO 15189:2012, also recognized as an IBMS approved training facility.
As part of the Microbiology team, you will contribute to delivering exceptional service while embodying our core values of compassion, bravery, and respect.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will undertake the role of a Clinical Microbiology Scientist, performing various microbiological techniques essential for the clinical assessment of infectious diseases. Responsibilities include:
- Rotating through all sections of Microbiology and Serology.
- Participating in the 24/7 shift rota, which may involve working during weekends, public holidays, and night shifts after appropriate training.
- Assisting the Deputy Laboratory Managers with supervisory duties, training initiatives, and maintaining UKAS accreditation standards.

Job Duties
Main duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting routine and specialized investigations following established standard operating procedures.
- Maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
- Identifying and interpreting abnormal test results.
- Providing guidance to service users regarding sample suitability and requests.
- Supervising Trainee Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants, delegating tasks as necessary.
- Ensuring compliance with safety protocols and recognizing potential hazards.
- Upholding confidentiality at all times.

Personal Specification
Essential Criteria
- IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences.
- Previous experience in an NHS laboratory setting.
Desirable Criteria
- IBMS Registration portfolio.
- HCPC registration.
- Experience with a wide range of analytical methods in a clinical Microbiology laboratory.
