About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our Community Rehabilitation Team at Solent NHS Trust.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a key resource for the Occupational Therapy needs of the wider multidisciplinary team caseload.
  • Guide the team on the appropriate use of therapeutic risk-taking during multidisciplinary team discussions, using specialist OT and mental health knowledge.
  • Meet the needs of service users in an effective, efficient, and recovery-focused approach.
  • Ensure the maintenance of a high standard of care to working-age adults with severe and enduring mental health difficulties, supporting the implementation of the Care Programme Approach (CPA) and act as Lead Professional.
  • Provide occupational-focused assessment, formulation, care plan, and intervention to patients with complex functional needs in their own homes and communities.
  • Evaluate Occupational Therapy interventions and consider ongoing needs of the patient and identify opportunities for longer-term support when required.
  • Chair care programme approach meetings, case conferences, and other clinical meetings as indicated.
  • Develop, facilitate, and evaluate a group work programme.
  • Support the wider Occupational Therapy service when required, which may involve working with patients in different services.
Requirements
  • Degree level or higher in Occupational Therapy
  • Health and Care Professions Council registration
  • Postgraduate experience working in complex and high-risk mental health settings
  • Managing challenging behaviours
  • Experience of applying the Occupational Therapy process in mental health
  • Experience of using standardised and functional assessments and activity analysis in a mental health setting
  • Experience of supporting and supervising junior staff
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
Essential Criteria
  • Ability to understand and apply a range of Occupational Therapy functional non-standardised and standardised assessments, goal-setting methods, individual and group interventions, and evaluation methods to support best practice in managing a complex caseload of clients
  • Able to review and develop the occupational therapy service, using specialist training and knowledge to inform relevant changes to service delivery
  • Able to communicate effectively with stakeholders, colleagues, patients, and their families, both verbally and in writing, to deliver information/interventions where the situation can be emotive, challenging, or hostile
  • Specialist skills in mental health-related risk assessment
  • Able to take personal responsibility, work autonomously, and manage time to promote the contribution of occupational therapy to a range of audiences
  • Able to motivate others, work independently, and as part of a team
  • Able to critique research and practice and apply to the area of work
  • Able to use computer efficiently, including email, internet, Microsoft Office, and video consultation software, and ability to learn service-specific systems
Knowledge and Experience
  • Specialist, up-to-date knowledge of Occupational Therapy practice
  • Knowledge of current issues in OT practice and mental health service provision, Government policy, drivers, and current best practice
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of research and audit methods
  • Knowledge of OT Professional Standards and Codes of Conduct
  • Knowledge of health and safety and risk assessment in mental health
  • Knowledge and experience of Mental Health, Mental Capacity Act, and Safeguarding

  • Ability to travel for meetings and to visit patients across a range of sites/locations in Southampton/Portsmouth/Hampshire as required
