The Role:

The Senior Trading Standards Officer (Commercial) will lead on commercial operations within the service, which primarily consists of leading the Buy With Confidence scheme, but may also expand into new commercial opportunities for the service to generate income.

The Buy With Confidence scheme is designed to assist consumers seeking legitimate businesses as well as businesses who wish to emphasize their genuine desire to work to high standards and be legally compliant.

The Senior Trading Standards Officer (Commercial) role will lead on the planning, promotion and delivery of the scheme. It is equally vital to the Service that the scheme both performs as a trusted trader scheme as well as remains commercially viable. It therefore requires a balanced approach from a methodical, legal and professional regulatory perspective as well as a desire to create a scheme which can generate income to facilitate its promotion and development which culminates in the best possible product for the protection and support of consumers as well as legitimate businesses.

Businesses who apply to become members undergo a number of checks by a Trading Standards Officer and are provided with assistance in ensuring legal compliance to trade fairly. This is the significant aspect which differentiates the scheme from other trusted trader schemes. As lead, this role will be responsible for developing its strategy for continuous improvement as well as leading on operational delivery. It will help define the scheme's overall direction, which will include developing a commercial strategy, launching new marketing initiatives, developing new products and reviewing strategic priorities to maximise value for our members, consumers and stakeholders.

You will work closely with the Senior Officer Group and the Leadership Team to develop priorities for delivery and improvement, reporting to both groups on progress against agreed milestones.

As part of the Business and Commercial Team, you will work with a small team of officers which support the Scheme, coordinating their workload to ensure tasks are prioritised and delivered for the benefit of businesses and consumers. As a highly organised individual you will effectively prioritise and manage competing workloads and consistently meet pressing deadlines.

You will also work closely with Trading Standards Officers in the wider service to explore the technical areas of legality and compliance for some of our businesses, particularly for those which work in more technical sectors. As part of the wider services goal of promoting cross-operational working, you will also support other service areas on an ad-hoc basis in the delivery of tactical operations.
