Position Overview

The Sports Grounds Safety Authority is seeking to fill the position of Inspector.

This role is designed to enhance the existing support for safety at sports venues across Scotland. The successful candidate will work from home, with a focus on ensuring safety standards are upheld throughout the region. Applications are encouraged from all areas of Scotland.

The chosen individual will be required to travel extensively within Scotland and maintain a flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and weekends, with compensatory time off provided.

This position represents a unique opportunity to contribute to the safety framework at sports grounds in Scotland. In collaboration with the Scottish Government, the aim is to refine safety certification processes and improve overall safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and enhance the safety management practices of clubs within your designated portfolio, collaborating to address any identified concerns.
  • Prepare detailed reports in clear English, ensuring timely submission.
  • Provide guidance and oversight on spectator accommodation, identifying necessary improvements.
  • Deliver prompt and accurate advice to the SGSA board as needed.
  • Adopt a risk-based approach to managing a portfolio of certifying authorities.
  • Maintain comprehensive business records and handle administrative tasks related to SGSA operations.
  • Assist in developing best practices and offer guidance on safety certification to local authorities and clubs.
  • Contribute to the SGSA's reputation and operational efficiency by adhering to corporate policies and engaging in relevant meetings.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development to support the organization's strategic goals.
  • Promote awareness of safety at sports grounds and the SGSA's role, both nationally and internationally.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Deputy Head of Inspectorate or Head of Inspectorate.

Candidate Profile

Essential Criteria

  • Interpersonal Skills: Proven ability to work collaboratively and manage stakeholder relationships effectively, even in challenging situations.
  • Project Management: Demonstrated experience in project and program management techniques, including risk assessment.
  • Record Management: Experience in auditing processes and maintaining effective record-keeping, including report writing.
  • Influencing Skills: Ability to engage with senior management effectively.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional oral and written communication skills, capable of representing the SGSA to diverse stakeholders.
  • Professionalism: Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team.

A valid UK driving license and access to a vehicle insured for business use are required.

Desirable Criteria

While a background in spectator safety is preferred, candidates from other sectors who meet the essential criteria are encouraged to apply.

  • Relevant degree or professional qualification.
  • Understanding of integrated safety management principles.
  • Experience in the sports sector at a national or international level.
  • Background in training development and delivery.
  • Proficiency in a second language.

Benefits

The salary for this position is £30,249, with an additional contribution of £8,763 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Other benefits include flexible working arrangements and 15 days of annual leave (pro-rated).
