About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Locum Consultant Medical Oncologist to join our team at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our Oncology department, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our cancer services.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide Medical Oncology Management: You will be responsible for coordinating the medical oncology management of patients with melanoma, ensuring best practice is maintained and working closely with medical oncology consultant colleagues.
  2. Support Inpatient Care: You will support and oversee the care of inpatients under the care of the Oncology team, providing expert guidance and leadership.
  3. Lead Ambulatory Oncology Unit: You will lead the Ambulatory Oncology Unit, managing consultant availability and review for nurse-led services, and ensuring seamless patient care.
  4. Immunotherapy Toxicity MDT: You will lead the Immunotherapy Toxicity MDT, held weekly, and supported by the Ambulatory Oncology Unit nurse in charge.
  5. Advice and Guidance: You will provide advice on medical oncology aspects of treatment and care for colleagues in other specialties within the department, St George's Healthcare, and General Practitioners.
  6. Multidisciplinary Teamwork: You will participate in and support the multidisciplinary oncology team, including Clinical Oncologists, Surgeons, junior team members, Specialist Nursing Staff, Therapists, Dietician, Social worker, Palliative Care, and Counselling for patients and families.
  7. Research and Development: You will contribute to ongoing research projects using clinical and/or laboratory facilities available.
  8. Teaching and Education: You will participate in teaching medical and other clinical staff and students, and act as a clinical supervisor to Specialist Registrars and/or Core Medical Trainees in your team.
  9. Leadership and Governance: You will provide leadership and support for the effective development of the Melanoma services, and contribute to the risk management of the department and the development and maintenance of best clinical practice through Clinical Governance.
Person Specification

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Medical Degree: You must hold a medical degree and be fully registered and licensed to practice with the General Medical Council or be eligible if currently working overseas.
  • Specialist Register: You must be on the Specialist Register for Medical Oncology or be eligible for inclusion within 3 months of the interview date.
  • Higher Professional Qualification: You must hold a higher professional qualification, such as MRCP.
  • Experience: You must have comprehensive training on a recognized SpR program or equivalent in Medical Oncology, and demonstrable experience in all aspects of Clinical Governance, including leading clinical audits and implementing change.
  • Skills: You must have strong leadership skills, high-level verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to develop rapport with patients and discuss treatment options in a way they can understand.
