Network Rail is enhancing its in-house ecological capabilities and is excited to announce a new opportunity within the Maintenance Delivery Unit. We are seeking a skilled Ecologist to join our dedicated team, contributing to essential ecological initiatives.
Location
This position can be based in various locations, providing flexibility in your work environment.
Role Details
The Ecologist will be integral to the team, focusing on ecological survey support, expert advice, and on-site supervision related to ecological matters. This role will involve conducting fieldwork and generating ecological reports to identify potential constraints, thereby informing project delivery.
The successful candidate will also oversee operations as an ecological clerk of works, ensuring compliance with ecological standards.

As part of Network Rail's commitment to environmental sustainability, the in-house ecologists play a crucial role in executing the objectives outlined in our National Environment and Sustainability Strategy, particularly concerning biodiversity. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a growing Ecology team within Network Rail.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be a proactive team player with exceptional communication skills. The role requires a full UK driving licence, as travel for site visits across various locations will be necessary. A vehicle will be provided for work-related travel.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct extended phase 1 habitat surveys with a minimum of two years of experience in project ecology or as an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW).
- Possess a relevant undergraduate degree in Ecology, Zoology, Biological Sciences, or a related Environmental Science field.
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of UK and European wildlife legislation and best practice guidelines.
- Experience with standard ecological survey methodologies.
- Capability to conduct protected species surveys.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Excellent report writing abilities, including method statements and survey reports.
Desirable Qualifications
- A relevant Master's degree in Ecology or a related discipline.
- Licenses for protected species surveys, such as dormice, bats, or great crested newts.
- Familiarity with the operational railway environment and PTS qualification.
- Membership in the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
- Experience in client meetings and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS.
- Experience in project management or coordination of project activities.
- Botanical skills to a Level 4 FISC - BSBI (or working towards).
