Position: Lead Marine Technician

Salary: £34,253 - £40,298 (based on experience)

Contract Type: Permanent

Working Hours: Full Time

Location: Highland, Scotland

About Us:
Our mission is straightforward: to save lives at sea. Since the 19th century, our teams have bravely risked their lives to rescue those in peril of drowning.

We are currently seeking a Lead Marine Technician to join our dedicated team. This role is ideal for an individual whose mechanical proficiency, resilience, leadership, and management capabilities are as robust as their commitment to maintaining our marine vessels in optimal working condition.

Benefits:
  • 26 days of annual leave plus Bank Holidays
  • Exceptional pension scheme (contributions of up to 16% of basic salary)
  • Life assurance
  • Health and dental cash plan

Your Responsibilities:
As a Lead Marine Technician, your primary focus will be on ensuring that our All Weather lifeboat is maintained to the highest standards. You will also oversee the daily operations of the Lifeboat Station, including training volunteer crew members to ensure readiness for emergencies.

Your role will encompass:
  • Inspiring and guiding your team; facilitating their growth, conducting training sessions, identifying improvement opportunities, and sharing your expertise.
  • Engaging with the public to promote awareness of our station's activities.
  • Leading initiatives on Quality, Safety, Health, and Environmental matters, fostering a positive culture within the station.
  • Managing the daily operations of the Lifeboat Station, which may include administrative tasks, record-keeping, and collaboration with the Operations Team.

About You:
You will possess the ability to cultivate effective relationships with volunteers, local supporters, and RNLI staff, acting as an ambassador for our mission within the community. You should hold or be willing to pursue the necessary qualifications and competencies for this position. If you do not meet every requirement listed, we still encourage you to apply, as we value diverse experiences that align with our mission.

Key attributes include a strong motivation to work both independently and collaboratively, a problem-solving mindset, and a commitment to personal and team development. You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to foster open and inclusive relationships. A pride in your work and a willingness to seek and accept feedback are essential.

To qualify for the Lead Marine Technician role, you will need:
  • Experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine diesel engines, with a solid engineering background.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and maximize team potential.
  • The capability to be certified as an RNLI ALB Afloat Mechanic.
  • Experience in a Lifeboat Mechanic role or similar, with a willingness to develop skills in other seagoing responsibilities.

Commitment to Safeguarding:
The RNLI is dedicated to safeguarding and ensuring the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. We expect all employees and volunteers to uphold this commitment and maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any incidents of bullying, abuse, harassment, or exploitation. All prospective employees and volunteers will undergo assessments during the recruitment process, including relevant background checks as necessary.

Diversity at the RNLI:
For nearly 200 years, our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice. We value diversity in backgrounds, skills, and perspectives within our teams, as it is essential for delivering a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organization and welcome applications from all individuals who share our commitment to our core values: trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable.
