Job Title: Adult and Child Psychiatrist

This is an exciting opportunity to join the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust as an Adult and Child Psychiatrist. The successful candidate will be part of the newly developed Forensic Intellectual and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (FIND) Community Team in South London and Maudsley.

The FIND Team provides safe transition for inpatients discharged from the inpatient Forensic Services to the community, offering specialist assessment, treatment, and consultation to the Forensic Service. This ensures a smooth, safe, and clinically justified pathway for individuals with mental illness, offending history, and learning disability, with or without neurodevelopmental disorder.

The South London Mental Health and Community Partnership (SLP) comprises the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, South West London and St Georges, and Oxleas. The SLP's goals focus on bringing care closer to home, improving patient pathways and outcomes by delivering excellent care in better environments. The SLP has a track record of delivering highly effective, clinically informed service developments to meet the needs of service-users.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will provide RC responsibility and care coordination for patients under the care of the FIND Community Team in South London & Maudsley. Additionally, they will provide consultancy and risk management advice services for adult patients under the care of SLaM services who have a confirmed diagnosis of LD and/or ASD, with a criminal conviction or an evidenced active risk of significant harm to others, or who display offending behaviours.

The Consultant will work closely with the team manager and the wider service to ensure safe and effective service delivery that meets the trust's Key Performance Indicators and the SLP Forensic PC objectives.

  • Establish a reliable and accessible work schedule with the team during work hours and be flexible and responsive to the needs of the service and the patients as necessary.
  • Provide excellent intensive and expert assessment, risk assessment, and management of patients with LD and/or ASD and complex mental health problems or behaviours that challenge.
  • Provide medical leadership in the team, ensuring safe and timely service provision for service users.
  • To work with senior managers and nurses, as well as other staff, to ensure that a high-quality safe clinical service is provided to all patients and to participate in and spearhead quality improvement activities.
  • To lead on responses to incidents and complaints if they arise.
  • To work flexibly and creatively as part of a multidisciplinary team, promoting informed risk taking and anti-discriminatory practice.
  • To liaise with medical colleagues concerning physical health care where needed.
Person Specification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of gaining CCT in forensic or learning disability psychiatry.
  • Section 12 approval.
  • Registered for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Experience
  • Inpatient or community forensic experience.
  • Inpatient or community learning disability or neurodevelopmental experience.
  • Competence in the assessment and management of physical ill health.
  • Management of patients with behavioural disturbance and complex mental health needs.
  • Quality assurance & improvement.
  • Experience of teaching medical students, psychiatric trainees, and other NHS staff.
  • Completion of a portfolio demonstrating competence in supervising trainees.
  • Experience of participation in research projects.
  • Experience in writing papers for academic journals and training materials.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Medication management for treatment-resistant conditions.
  • Management of complex multi-source information to develop a formulation and management plan, integrating biological, psychological, and social perspectives.
  • Physical health assessment and promotion.
  • Appropriate use of mental health and other legislation.
  • Use of reflective practice, both for continuous professional development and for team relationships and functioning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
