About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maintenance Engineer to join our team at Birtwistles Food Group. As a key member of our operations team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective maintenance of all plant and equipment, ensuring that our production plan is achieved.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise and assist in the design of new plant to ensure adherence to best practice for maintenance of hygiene, health, and safety.
  • Ensure all plant and equipment are maintained and in good repair, with servicing carried out within defined timescales, and all engineering work is carried out in accordance with best practice.
  • Manage the services of external contractors to ensure work is completed to company requirements, within defined time scales, and adheres to Food Safety and Health and Safety requirements.
  • Ensure all plant and equipment are checked before the start of production.
  • Review and ensure the methods used for calibrating and checking measuring and test equipment, and the calibrations carried out by contractors, are reviewed regularly.
  • Identify training requirements and ensure all relevant personnel have adequate training and knowledge to operate machinery.
  • Ensure planned preventive maintenance schedules exist for plant, equipment, and building fabric in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and agreements by the company, enabling correct operation and function.
  • Ensure company policies, procedures, and standards are followed.
  • Ensure engineering records are accurately maintained and presented in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with relevant management regarding engineering issues detrimental to production requirements.
Requirements
  • Nationally recognized Apprenticeship or equivalent in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, plus ONC/HNC or equivalent in Electrical or Mechanical Bias.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with managers in other areas of the business to deliver common goals in terms of profitability and provision of agreed service levels to customers.
  • Willingness to embrace change and ability to work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to read electrical/parts drawings.
  • Fault-finding skills and experience with corrective action.
Desirable Skills
  • Minimum of 3 years of previous experience in a similar role.
  • 17th Edition (Electrical standards).
  • Proven post-apprenticeship experience in an engineering environment within a similar food industry site, working to BRC standards.
  • A high degree of troubleshooting skills combined with the ability to make decisions and operate on your own.
  • A good understanding of manufacturing processes and procedures and experience in working within the fast-moving consumer goods sector.
  • A background in fresh, chilled meat/poultry is desirable but not essential, as full training will be given.
