Devon, United Kingdom Devon County Council Full time

Fixed Term Contract for up to 12 months (with potential for extension)

Devon County Council is currently enhancing its Finance Services, integrating a new financial management system alongside broader Microsoft 365 tools as part of a comprehensive transformation initiative.

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for two Finance Technicians to join our team for a duration of 12 months.

These positions will collaborate closely with a Finance Business Partner to assist various departments with budget formulation, year-end forecasting, monitoring, and financial analysis. Beyond traditional budgetary support, there will be opportunities to engage in transformation projects related to cost management and anticipated benefits, as well as developing financial models to aid in service evaluations. This role serves as an excellent stepping stone in your finance career, allowing you to expand or enhance your experience for future opportunities.

Although the job description is career graded, we are seeking candidates at the AAT qualified or CCAB part-qualified level (Grade 16A or 20). This level of work has been evaluated in partnership with a Finance Business Partner and requires initiative in supporting our more complex departments.

You will be tasked with maintaining precise financial records while upholding the principles of security and confidentiality.

As a values-driven organization, we strive to achieve our vision of creating a healthy and appealing environment for individuals to live, work, and visit. We accomplish this by taking personal responsibility for the quality of our work, the relationships we cultivate, and for driving enhancements in our services.

As a small district council, this role presents a fantastic opportunity to broaden your experience and support a diverse array of services that are typically unavailable outside of local government, while also gaining invaluable knowledge in change management related to systems, digital tools, and service evaluations.

We are an equal opportunities employer dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals, regardless of age, caring responsibilities, disability, gender, gender reassignment, marital status, pregnancy, race, religion, sexual orientation, or socio-economic background. We also encourage applications from military veterans and their families.

We offer the following benefits:

  • A generous flexible working scheme allowing up to 2 days of flexi leave per month.
  • Hybrid working options, with 50% of hours eligible to be completed remotely.
  • A newly renovated office space with zero carbon emissions.
  • Participation in the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • A generous annual leave and wellness package.
  • Discounted gym memberships at local leisure centers.
  • Opportunities for professional development and learning.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C or above (or equivalent).
  • Relevant IT skills and experience with Microsoft 365 and financial systems.
  • Experience in an office setting with accountancy responsibilities, working directly with budget managers.
  • Strong numeracy and spreadsheet capabilities to extract, manipulate, analyze, and report financial data.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly in both verbal and written forms.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team and the motivation to work independently, with effective task prioritization.
  • A curious mindset, open to change and the development of new skills.

Desirable qualifications may include:

  • An understanding of relevant legislation.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience within the Local Government sector.

Qualification and Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 16A: AAT or equivalent with CPD where relevant, with 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Grade 20: AAT or equivalent with CPD and at least 1 year post-qualification (AAT), with 5 years of relevant experience.

We encourage you to review the job description and person specification for the Finance Technician role to determine how your skills and experiences align with the requirements.
