London, Greater London, United Kingdom Canal & River Trust Full time

Job Purpose

Job Title: M&E Technician

Advertised Salary: £30,000 - £34,500 (depending on experience) + Inner London Allowance (£4,000) + benefits.

Location: Remote, with regular travel across our London & South East network.

The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK's largest charities, responsible for the upkeep of 2,000 miles of historic waterways, including canals, rivers, docks, and reservoirs. Our mission is to preserve these vital assets for future generations, ensuring they remain vibrant and accessible. Our waterways feature numerous mechanically and electrically operated structures, such as bridges and locks, where we integrate modern technology with historical engineering to enhance longevity and functionality.

As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician, you will leverage your technical skills to perform maintenance and repair tasks on M&E structures, equipment, and systems, thereby safeguarding the reputation of our network as a national treasure while delivering excellent customer service.

Our L&SE maintenance team is seeking a qualified M&E engineer to support maintenance operations for electrical and mechanical assets, with a focus on hydraulics. Safety is paramount, and we require someone adept at isolating power supplies and control panels, troubleshooting faults within 400v/230v/24v systems, and resolving issues effectively. Given that many of our M&E Technicians work independently, it is essential that candidates possess the necessary qualifications to perform their duties legally and safely.

Ideally, you will be well-versed in mechanical and electrical isolation techniques for safe operations and possess the ability to troubleshoot systematically without supervision. The ideal candidate will receive ongoing training to support their professional development and will be welcomed into a nurturing environment that fosters adaptation to our unique infrastructure.

Location & Coverage

Reporting to base at London Docklands, your responsibilities will involve working and traveling across various assets in the London area, from Brentford on the Grand Union in the West to Limehouse on the Regents, including the Docklands and Olympic Park, extending to the River Lee & Stort to the North of London.

Occasional work in other regions may also be required.

Residing near these areas is crucial to facilitate regular travel along the L&SE canal and river networks.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

This role supports Canal & River Trust's goals to enhance safety and increase public engagement with the inland waterways network. Your expertise will be vital in maintaining our infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safety in all activities and contribute to a culture of safe working.
  • When necessary, oversee volunteers in executing tasks to ensure safety and quality, while promoting volunteer satisfaction.
  • Assist in delivering a program of M&E maintenance and repair works, collaborating with staff and contractors to maintain the waterway infrastructure and maximize customer satisfaction.
  • Provide mechanical and electrical support to resolve issues as they arise, and participate in the On Call Rota for after-hours assistance and emergency response.
  • Under supervision, propose solutions to minor issues and implement minor design changes as needed.
  • Deliver first-level response for reactive works, ensuring customer safety and network availability.
  • Follow a planned schedule for inspecting, monitoring, and reporting on M&E asset conditions.
  • Provide excellent customer service while operating Trust assets and addressing customer inquiries.
  • Consistently embody the Trust's values and behaviors.

About You:

This position is suited for an Electrical Engineer/Technician/Operative with a solid foundation in mechanical engineering and relevant experience, such as in the water industry or manufacturing environments where troubleshooting wiring systems of 400/230/24 volts is routine. We prioritize resolving issues efficiently and trust you to make critical decisions to ensure compliance and functionality.

If you have experience diagnosing and repairing various electrical and/or mechanical assets, you may be an excellent fit for this role. We welcome Technicians with diverse backgrounds, particularly those with experience in water plants, pumps, sewage systems, hydraulics, production lines, traffic control systems, packaging machinery, elevators, escalators, automated gates, or heating control systems.

Preferred Qualifications and Attainments:

  • C&G2391/2 or equivalent for testing and inspection of electrical installations.
  • C&G BS7671 18th edition wiring regulations preferred.
  • NVQ3/C&G in an Electrical Discipline or equivalent multi-skilled maintenance engineering qualification.
  • Short courses in specific mechanical or electrical disciplines are advantageous.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of 3+ years' experience as an Electrical Engineer/Technician/Operative is essential, with experience in mechanical engineering or related fields being highly desirable.
  • Proven experience as a multi-skilled engineer is advantageous.
  • Experience with hydraulic systems and troubleshooting is beneficial.
  • Essential experience with electrical control panel troubleshooting.
  • Apprentice-trained multi-skilled maintenance engineers are highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Familiarity with modern computerized planned maintenance systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A valid driving license.

Safety:

  • Adhere to Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policies and standards, report incidents, and assess risks to adjust work methods as necessary. Ensure all equipment is suitable for the task and consider the behavior of yourself and others.

Safeguarding:

  • Be aware of your responsibilities regarding safeguarding and support our commitment to providing safe environments and practices that promote the safety and welfare of colleagues and visitors.

What We Offer

In addition to a salary of £30,000 - £34,500 (depending on experience), you will receive an Inner London Allowance (£4,000), a competitive contributory DC Pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, and various employee benefits, including several salary sacrifice options. These benefits include:

  • 25 days paid holiday, plus paid Bank Holidays, increasing to 27 days plus Bank Holidays after 3 years.
  • An annual £200 personal learning & growth award for any learning-related activity.
  • Free access to specialist counseling services for various issues.
  • Access to a range of employee benefits, including store discounts and holiday purchase schemes.
  • 2 days paid volunteering leave for community project work.

At the Trust, we are passionate about our waterways and the people who care for them. We believe that a diverse workforce fosters a variety of ideas and approaches, enhancing our mission. We strive to represent the diverse communities we serve and welcome applicants from all sectors of the community.
