Innovative Research Associate in Flexible Packaging Solutions
3 months ago
BACKGROUND
The Department of Materials at The University of Manchester is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to contribute to the Bio-Active Materials Group led by Professor Jonny Blaker. This role focuses on the development of innovative barrier materials derived from bio-based sources, particularly lignocellulosic fibres, aimed at enhancing flexible packaging solutions. The project is supported by the UKRI EPSRC early-stage Prosperity Partnership programme and involves collaboration with esteemed institutions.
The ideal candidate will be a dedicated and creative experimental scientist who has recently completed a PhD or equivalent in Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in the formulation and specialized knowledge in the spinning of bio-based nanofibres, along with their characterization, is crucial. This position emphasizes the design and engineering of bio-based materials to achieve barrier properties that rival those of traditional fossil-derived materials, particularly for moisture-sensitive applications. The role will involve close collaboration with a significant industrial partner.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Your primary responsibilities will include the design, formulation, and spinning of fibres from bio-based polymer solutions to create advanced flexible packaging solutions with enhanced barrier properties. You will optimize spinning solutions and parameters for producing large area mats using the pilot-scale electrospinning facility. The characterization of fibres and mats will involve assessing areal density, porosity, fibre size distributions, and their physical and chemical properties. Additionally, you will engage in project management, supervise junior researchers, maintain comprehensive research records, assist in securing intellectual property, and participate in regular project meetings.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT IN RETURN
The University is committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity, striving for true equality of opportunity for all community members.
Benefits include:
- Competitive pension scheme
- Comprehensive employee health and wellbeing services, including an Employee Assistance Programme
- Generous annual leave entitlement, in addition to public holidays
- Additional paid closure during the holiday season
- Local and national discounts at various major retailers
