Senior Clinical Optometrist

Ipswich, Suffolk, United Kingdom East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

We are pleased to present an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned Optometrist to become a vital member of our team in a senior clinical optometrist capacity.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will deliver top-tier ophthalmic services to patients in the region.

In this senior clinical optometrist role, you will possess extensive prior experience in providing specialized ophthalmology care and will be recognized as an independent prescriber on the General Optical Council Specialty register. Your responsibilities will include conducting independent Ophthalmology and Optometry clinics, as well as contributing to the training and education of both departmental staff and the broader optometry community.

For candidates with less experience and relevant postgraduate qualifications, we encourage applications for a developmental role, which may commence at either Band 6 or 7, contingent on prior qualifications and experience. Advancement through salary bands will be based on the attainment of clinical competencies and postgraduate qualifications.

We are dedicated to supporting the successful candidate in enhancing their knowledge, skills, and achieving professional competence.

Key Responsibilities

As an autonomous advanced clinical practitioner, you will:

  • Provide high-quality, individualized clinical management for patients utilizing advanced clinical assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills to determine and implement necessary treatment modifications.
  • Deliver a variety of extended specialist services.
  • Operate as an independent registered practitioner with substantial experience in an ophthalmology extended role, ensuring high-quality, individualized clinical management for patients.
  • Serve as a clinical expert in direct patient care, capable of making high-level decisions informed by comprehensive history taking, diagnostic assessments, and treatment skills. You will be responsible and accountable for your decisions, actions, and omissions at this advanced level of practice.
  • Conduct thorough assessments, examinations, investigations, diagnoses, and treatments for patients, resulting in safe patient management and the formulation of appropriate management plans.
  • Utilize advanced technical skills to provide specialized ocular treatments, including YAG laser and SLT.
  • Exhibit a critical understanding of your level of responsibility and autonomy, recognizing the limits of your competence and professional scope of practice, particularly when dealing with complexity, risk, uncertainty, and incomplete information.
