Position Overview

The Clinical Microbiology Service is dedicated to delivering a wide array of clinical and diagnostic solutions across multiple acute care facilities.

Our centralized laboratory at the Leicester Royal Infirmary is equipped to offer specialized and routine laboratory services in Bacteriology and Virology, catering to all three sites within the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the local GP practices.

As a registered Biomedical Scientist with HCPC, the individual in this role will be integral to the departmental team, contributing to a service that is quality-driven, cost-effective, and focused on patient care, in alignment with our organizational vision.

The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee a significant segment of the service, providing leadership, management, and expert scientific guidance while managing the allocated budget for the area.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a high level of scientific acumen, guiding others in performing specialized analyses of pathological samples using various technologies and accurately reporting results.

We seek a proven leader to collaborate with clinical, scientific, and administrative personnel to enhance the performance of Leicester Pathology Services.

Key Responsibilities

The individual will:

  • Lead teams in Microbiology, formulating and executing local strategic plans while ensuring performance objectives are met.
  • Collaborate with the Microbiology Management Team to provide operational business management and planning support across all service areas.
  • Act as a deputy for the Microbiology General Manager when necessary.
  • Ensure efficient and effective operational management of the designated area, guaranteeing the delivery of high-quality clinical services.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Overseeing service delivery in the specified area, ensuring alignment with departmental objectives through effective staff and resource allocation.
  • Contributing to the strategic growth of the service by providing expert insights on service delivery and resource needs.
  • Ensuring staff management and training adhere to departmental training plans, aligning duties with competencies.
  • Managing staff-related issues, including absence, disciplinary actions, grievances, and counseling.
  • Establishing effective communication channels with staff and other relevant areas.
  • Leading recruitment and selection processes for the area, ensuring adherence to vacancy management policies.
  • Participating in departmental education initiatives, including the supervision and teaching of students.
  • Assisting medical personnel in interpreting complex technical and scientific matters.
  • Ensuring proper operation and control of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Managing processes within the assigned area, resolving complex scientific and technical challenges to ensure service continuity.
  • Acting as Quality Manager, overseeing the application of the Quality Management System and maintaining quality standards as required by national accreditation bodies.
  • Managing Health and Safety standards in collaboration with relevant managers, ensuring compliance with policies.
  • Developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures and policies for the designated area.
  • Monitoring internal and external quality assurance, taking corrective actions as necessary.
  • Evaluating and implementing new equipment, methods, and practices as appropriate.
  • Maintaining expert knowledge of current technological and scientific advancements.
  • Providing 24/7 service coverage within the area, serving as the senior contact for emergencies.
  • Promoting continuous professional development and lifelong learning among staff.
  • Performing complex analytical tasks as needed.
  • Producing and maintaining statistical reports for the section.
  • Managing personal work activities efficiently to optimize time and resources.
  • Contributing to discussions and forums affecting the parent trusts as necessary.
  • Providing specialized knowledge as required for the parent trusts and Pathology-wide services.
  • Representing the service at relevant Trust and Health Community meetings.
  • Participating in Trust-wide and Pathology Service-wide groups as appropriate.
  • Undertaking additional duties as required, including acting as a deputy for the General Manager.
  • Participating in the Pathology Duty managers on-call rota.
