Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in overseeing a team of pharmacy assistants and trainee pharmacy assistants, ensuring the delivery of patient-centered, high-quality care at the Royal London Hospital.

To enhance the pharmacy service, the post holder will transition from traditional dispensary and medicines management models to a more integrated approach, utilizing skills and knowledge from both areas to form a versatile team focused on comprehensive pharmacy service delivery. Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing patient care at the ward level through effective medicines optimization.
  • Supporting the management of the dispensary on a rotational basis.
  • Monitoring and reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Training and developing team members.
  • Maintaining and auditing controlled drugs, FP10, and stock management.
  • Coordinating pharmacy-specific audits.
  • Implementing and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Facilitating ward-based dispensing programs, including satellite dispensing areas.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Experience in a hospital or community pharmacy environment.
  • Significant experience as a pharmacy technician.
  • Experience in supervising staff and providing developmental feedback.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy labeling and stock control systems.
  • Patient counseling experience.
  • Experience in organizing daily pharmacy services.
  • Experience in conducting regular team meetings.
  • Experience in providing constructive feedback.
  • Knowledge of hospital stock distribution and replenishment services.
  • Experience in medicines management within a ward setting, including medication history taking and POD assessment.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership capabilities.

  • Understanding of stock control systems.
  • Knowledge of medications, their side effects, and resources for further information.
  • Familiarity with Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines requirements.
  • Understanding the importance of adherence to SOPs and legislation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of patient safety initiatives.

Desirable:

  • Awareness of how pharmacy technicians can evolve their roles.

Qualifications:

  • BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification.
  • HEE LaSE Medicines Optimisation qualification or equivalent.
