The London Assembly plays a crucial role in overseeing the Mayor's actions by interrogating decisions made by the Mayor. Additionally, the Assembly delves into significant issues affecting London. Comprised of 25 Assembly Members, elected every four years concurrently with the Mayor, the Secretariat facilitates the Assembly's operations. The Communications Team enhances the visibility of the Assembly's work through various channels including press relations, social media, and public events.

About the Role:

This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as the Research and Policy Manager for the Conservative Members of the London Assembly. The role focuses on delivering research and policy assistance to the Members of the Group, alongside managing the associated staffing team. Collaborating closely with the Head of Office, this role is vital in aiding Assembly Members with their responsibilities and ensuring accountability of the Mayor of London. You will be tasked with providing research, policy briefings, reports, and support to Assembly Members, while also developing and executing comprehensive outreach and communication strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day management and leadership of the Senior Researchers within the team.
  • Lead the production, publication, and related activities of reports for elected Members, ensuring alignment with their priorities in major policy areas.
  • Design and implement proactive outreach and communication strategies for assigned Assembly Members, coordinating closely with communications and research colleagues.
  • Guarantee that elected Members receive exceptional research services and policy support, engaging with relevant external entities across public, private, and voluntary sectors.
  • Serve as a point of escalation for GLA officers regarding London Assembly scrutiny activities related to Group Members, ensuring effective communication and feedback loops.
  • Assist the Head of Office in leading the broader team, providing problem-solving capabilities and delivery support.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

To qualify for this role, candidates must demonstrate the following:

  • Extensive experience in a similar capacity within a political or high-profile environment, adept at resolving complex issues and liaising with external bodies.
  • Proven ability to lead and inspire a team to implement policies, programs, and strategies effectively.
  • Capability to produce clear and concise oral and written reports on complex matters for diverse audiences, presenting information beneficially for Assembly Members.
  • Demonstrated experience in policy briefing within a political or public sector context, with strong research skills and the ability to quickly assimilate information from various sources.
  • A comprehensive understanding of current policy challenges facing London, along with knowledge of the legislative framework governing the GLA.
